New and "Approved" means "Improved"

Having a network with 123,000 members poses this question, can our network handle this kind of volume and continued growth at this rate?  Yes it can!  However, there are some things that have had to be changed in order to build a better, more secured and stable platform.  Here's your update from the "ActiveRain Files" regarding Widgets and the New HTML approved list.

There are more widgets out there than we have members and new scripts and widgets are being created by the hundreds everyday.  Unfortunately, some of those widgets, scripts, and HTML codes can jeopardize and compromise our growing network.  After taking a serious and detailed look at these, we have come up with the Approved ActiveRain Widget and approved HTML List.

ActiveRain historically has not supported or endorsed third party sites and software applications that are used to create and write posts, grab the code, text, or HTML,  then copy and paste it to ActiveRain.  Fortunately, many of these have worked in the past and will continue to do so, but some outside sources of  HTML may no longer be compatible with our system.  We recommend creating new posts in the ActiveRain formats provided.  Security is our #1 priority to avoid malicious or viral causing scripts or code.

What Is A Widget?

Here are the approved Widgets for ActiveRain

This list only applies to "script" widgets.  Not all widgets have script codes in them.  If you do not see a widget that you are using here, and it is currently working on your Blog, then it is not a script widget that we have to worry about, and it is automatically an approved widget.  If your widget is not working, then chances could be that it has code or script in it that will not be allowed on the network.  It may also be that the widget was not installed properly, dare I say...operator error.  LOL~  Here's How To Add Widgets.

(Got Your Own Widget? Make suggestions here, but I can't guaranty they will get approved)

Here are the New "approved" HTML Tags for ActiveRain

Don't pass out on me now, this is important stuff.  I'll provide a link to each <tags> definition.  Beginners: What Is HTML?

a, abbr, acronym, address, b, big, blockquote, br, center, cite, code, dd, del, dfn, div, dt, em, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, hr, i, iframe, img, ins, kbd, li, object, ol, p, param, pre, samp, small, span, strong, sub, sup, table, tbody, td, tfoot, thead, tr, tt, ul, var.

For Font Sizes: Use the <h1-h6> tags, or in Wysiwyg mode, highlight your text then use the CTRL+1 thru CTRL+6 keys.

For Font colors: Use this html code now  <span style="color: #29d150;"> instead of this <font color="green"> Here's a link to some different color codes.   Still Lost or Confused?  Click Here

Look for enhancements and upgrades to the wysiwyg editor in the near future.

A Few New Fixed and Added Features

We updated the network last night and ran our maintenance & upgrades.  It will just keep getting better!!

  • Every 10 seconds, your draft posts are now being saved automatically.  No more lost posts from frozen browsers, accidentally clicking the back button, or just mistakenly clicking on that red x up in the right hand corner.
  • All hyperlinks in your posts should now open in a new window by default unless you change that option manually. Posts written with links in the last week or so will have to be manually corrected.
  • Twitter Feeds from ActiveRain Posts are now working again.
  • Links placed in comments will still work but have "no-follow" tags.  This allows members to place links that are related to the authors topic, but spamming will be useless.

Though you may have experienced some minor technical issues in the past, or will from time to time in the future, just know that we are restructuring and rebuilding a stronger, faster, secure network for our members.  Your support and patience is always appreciated, and your help and participation has been stellar.

Thanks for Building and Growing with us. Happy Holidays. :-)

Very cute!, Bradley!

Now that we've reduced a few of the widgets here on AR, maybe your profile page will load faster?... Last time I clicked on it, I was able to mow the lawn, wash both cars, and talk to my Mom on the phone before it opened!  :)

Brad - Thanks for the update.  Love the "autosave" feature on the drafts.  I've lost a few things before as I made a mistake or something froze.  Luckily, the first time it happened I learned to do a lot of copying, just in case.  I actually have a few things on my desktop that are really ActiveRain stuff I'm working on...just didn't want to mess it up while doing 20 other things.

Marilyn and Vickie - I know my name's not Brad, but thought I'd let you know...postlets still are working on my blog.  The reason is that the postlets code is straight HTML, no scripts in it, so it falls under the approved list of HTML and not a widget.  Thought I'd help you out, since I'm sure Brad will be swamped with questions and comments.

Thanks for your work- have a good weekend.

Bookmarked,

However, I don't get this part or what it means:

Don't pass out on me here, this is important stuff.  I'll provide a link to each code's definition.

a, abbr, acronym, address, b, big, blockquote, br, center, cite, code, dd, del, dfn, div, dt, em, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, hr, i, iframe, img, ins, kbd, li, object, ol, p, param, pre, samp, small, span, strong, sub, sup, table, tbody, td, tfoot, thead, tr, tt, ul, var.

For Font Sizes: Use the h1-h6 tags or in Wysiwyg mode, highlight text then use the CTRL+1 thru CTRL+6

For Font colors: Use this html code now  <span style="color: #29d150;"> instead of this <font color="green"> Here is a link to some of the different color codes.

As was discussed in one of my last 3-4 posts...some things are more technical than some of us that have not grown up with computer science courses understand.

I understand font size and colors, however, the stuff above?  Forgettaboutit..................

As I suggested to Bob...There needs to be Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior explanations of the technical information on here.  Yes, those members under 35-40 might have had some training, but those of us over 40...are self taught...unless you are a total techie like you guys...and I think I'm speaking for more people on here than will admit it.

Auto-save every 10 seconds!? Now that is awesome! I wasn't expecting that. What a fabulous idea. Thank you!

And my Copyscape button, HTML and CSS code header, and my Postlets are all working so I can't complain about that. I assume we can still embed videos, so I guess I don't have to worry about WellcomeMat. That would really suck if I had to go through all my previous posts, to find which ones had those videos in them, if they didn't work! The only I haven't checked is my "Slide" slide shows and "Rock You" slide shows. I really hope those are working!

5:31am • #69

Hey Teresa - Not sure what "little spinny thing" you're referring to, I have nothing like that on my Blog or this page.  The additional plugin needed is probably because of the Mixpo video I have of you in SF on my sidebar.  My profile page, now that's a different story.  That's my ebook and may load slower than most.  Thanks for the heads up, I'm always looking to see how close I can come to crashing and breaking everything!  LOL~

Karen Monsour - with the number of members we have on AR these days, I know you'll agree we have a wide variety of levels of experience both technical and non-technical.  Some of my friends and readers here have been asking for this post as they have had issues with using their widgets, script codes, HTML etc. that come from other sources like Real Estate shows, vFlyer, postlets, statcounter, and the list goes on and on.  We have made some changes to the AR Network, and this is to inform members of what those changes are.

With all due respect, this may be a bit over some peoples heads, I understand that, this is why I spent hours creating the links to help members like yourself learn and understand this stuff.  I even went in and added a couple extra links just for YOU.  Here is a site that teaches the basics of HTML and it was shared with me by a 12 year old 7th grader.  No sense in me re-creating what others have already done for you.

              Beginners: What Is HTML?          What are HTML <tags>      Still Lost or Confused?  Click Here

WEB3SCHOOLS (the best things in life are free) is a great place for you to start getting your arms around this stuff and start learning.  I do hope you'll take the time to advance your knowledge, it's not going away and is to your benefit to invest a small amount of your time to research and expand your level of knowledge and expertise.  (like all of us have to do at some point) I can try to teach you, but I can't make you do it, and I can't do it for you.  :-)

6:37am • #79

Steve - 3 weeks should be plenty of time.  The beauty of AR is that members can learn in weeks what took other members months or even years to learn.  It's the sharing of information and experience that makes this place soooo powerful.  "People Helping People" that's my motto.  :-))

Brad,

Thanks for putting my back but quite frankly sometimes I'll go to someones blog and it takes forever to load the page...by the time it does...I'm gone...too many cause my PC to lock up...I think it is nice to have some as long as it is in moderation.

I'm slowly learning the html tags. Lani made me learn some at AgentGenius. (Not made but encouraged.) LOL She calls them funny names to make her remember so that has helped me too.

I was actually thinking of taking a class at my community college. Of course Allyssa who is 18 and majoring in graphics knows most of them. When I get stuck I bring her in and she does a few things and it works.

Problem is she doesn't want to teach me.............too busy. She is self taught and is board in most of her graphic classes. She uses the MAC and that is what I will have next time I see you. (((fingers crossed)))

Anyway I get your Techno Blog first before I come here, so I saved it there to play with this.

Thanks for 1) auto save 2) getclicky staying around 3) for giving so much of yourself to this community above and beyond what anyone could ask or think.

You were born for this job.

So what is it about Statcounter that makes it unsafe?  I've used it for years on my sites.  I know that Wordpress.com won't allow javascript thus I can only use an abbreviated verson of statcounter on my wp blog....will the html version of statcounter not work either?  Or is it just the javascript version?

The Javascript version of course is more robust, but the html is better than nothing, will that work too?

And an off the cuff response to those who are confounded by all the HTML tags: my opinion is, if you don't know what they are, you probably don't really need them and can get along fine without them unless you really want to get into detailed design.

Brad - Not a problem.  I wish I had been drinking egg nog and answering questions.  That's like a little slice of heaven for me!  I figured there were some people who needed to know about postlets (so many people use it, so it probably scared lots of people to think it might not work), so by letting them know as soon as I saw it, I figured I could probably prevent a few agents from jumping off of large bridges into the depths below.  I was even going to chime in on the RealEstateShows questions, but you beat me to the punch.  I was one of the panicked ones sending in support requests here and to Jeff when mine suddenly went blank and when I looked at the code...they were stripped of everything.  After coding my post in html and then watching it get stripped, I was ready to find a bridge myself.  Thanks again Brad.

Thank you Brad and the AR team for all of the hard work.  I love the new draft save feature.  Personally, I feel a lot of widgets just take too long to load a page, maybe it is just because I have not taken the time to load them myself.

  • First: Jon Washburn for creating and founding AR.
  • Second: Bob Stewart for hiring me! LOL~
  • Third: Rich Jacobson, for having too many widgets and causing all the ruckus..  hehehe..
    (Love ya Rich)
  • Fourth: Claire Cruver, for keeping us all in line, paying the bills,  and for keeping the ship afloat
  • Fifth: Jeff Corbett, for his great looks, kharisma, experience, and knowledge
  • Sixth:... and in this case most importantly...

***Jorgen Hahn***

Credit should be given where credit is due.  Jorgen is the man who makes all these things work on AR.  He is behind the scenes mostly, but without him, much of these upgrades and enhancements would not be possible.  Be sure to thank Jorgen and the entire team anytime you get the chance, in fact....I think we all have paypal accounts!!  LOL~  :-)))

Well Brad....this is a stumper.....

I tried <table bgcolor="color"> and the AR HTML editor did NOT use it...the command was still there, but it did not execute it.

I also tried <bodybg color="color"> and the AR HTML editor stripped it from the command structure......and obviously it did not execute if it was stripped....like I have stated before...I have been told by other AR members that the Blog Customizer is doing this......

I don't know if it is true.... you guys will have to look into it...I do NOT have the access to prey behind the AR veil....... If I did...I MIGHT be able to find out what is going on.....

BUT....I do NOT get paid for it either..... so I say, "Let the other guys handle this".......

I hope the guys at Daneko(sp) have a handle on it......

So they can,"Pretty up" their posts......

Brad--

Maybe you can explain the difference between AR Statistics and Sitemeter stats. Or, for that matter, any other 3rd party stat widget.

On AR Statistics, a new post might register 12 views and 10 clicks within the first 15 minutes. But Sitemeter only registers 2 pageloads in the same time period. Statcounter also had the same problem.

Thanks for any clarification,

Judy

Brad, I have been absent from AR for the most part for several months due to the drama related to my outside blog...once we are all safely moved, there will be many posts about the craziness and huge toll it has taken on us.  In the meantime, I stopped by to read your posts so that I can catch up.  Trust me, after all that I and other have been through I can honestly say I now have an idea of what you guys at AR deal with on a daily basis.  You are truly incredible and I for one in so grateful to be a part of this group.  Thank you!

10:02am • #157
240,996 Points 16 Featured Posts Outside Blog

Judy - I have found the AR stats to be very unreliable for page views - it counts every time you reload your own page; I tried it once to see and sure enough, it registers me every time.  With statcounter I could exclude my IP address so I didn't distort my stats every time I replied to comments or edited my page.  Guaging visits by clicks is slightly better but it still won't be as accurate and robust as Statcounter.

This is why I'm particularly annoyed that Statcounter is removed and nobody will tell me exactly what it is about Statcounter that makes it "unsafe."

11:36am • #158

Karen - We took a closer look at StatCounter, and we won't be able to allow it on the network in its current state. Here's why:

<!-- Start of StatCounter Code -->
<script type="text/javascript">
var sc_project=4258968;
var sc_invisible=1;
var sc_partition=34;
var sc_click_stat=1;
var sc_security="27a515aa";
</script>

It relies on the execution of arbitrary javascript, which we do not allow any longer. This is why StatCounter was removed  from the list of allowed <script> widgets.  Sorry you are annoyed by our decision, but I think you would be even more annoyed by some of the results and problems these types of scripts could cause us ALL in the future.  I'm sure with some effort from us both, we can find an alternate solution.

11:58am • #159
107,876 Points 8 Featured Posts Outside Blog

Karen and Others,

There's an 'html only' version of statcounter, which I've been using all along. So while it may not be as robust as the Java version (and I can only guess what I've been missing!), it's still a solid performer and will give you some valuable statistics.

Judy

12:10pm • #160

Judy - thanks for pointing out an alternate solution for StatCounter using the "HTML Only" version.  I hope this will be a good alternative to the javescript widget.  I appreciate you looking out for our members like Karen and others.  You're the bomb.  :-)

12:59pm • #161

Brad, this post is a keeper!!!  Thanks so much for explaining it all...I didn't know what html was about 2 months ago, hoping to follow in your footsteps and have the hang of it within the year...LOL!  Many many thanks!!!

Amy - way to stick with it.  I still am learning HTML to this day, and I too hope to be better off in the future due to research and all the learning efforts. Thanks for commenting, just kno you're not alone.  :-)

1:04pm • #162

I noticed the auto save earlier tonight and was very excited.  I get some of the rest of the stuff, which is very exciting as 6 months ago I would've been totally lost instead of somewhat lost.

Christine - in time, it does all start making sense, but you do have to apply yourself and have the desire to want to learn. You have come a long way, I still remember our first phone call, yes, you have come a long way!  :-)

1:06pm • #163
240,996 Points 16 Featured Posts Outside Blog

The HTML version of Statcounter is not very robust and it doesn't know you from anyone else, so again your own visits to your blog will bloat your stats.  It also does not tell you what keywords/search terms visitors used to find your site.

What would be really helpful is if AR would implement stats like Wordpress.com has - on Wordpress your own visits to the blog are not counted when you are logged in, and it will tell you what search terms were used to find the blog, and it will give referrers. Then I wouldn't care about Statcounter being lost.

The reason I want to know what search terms people used is to be able to know which direction I should take blogging.  I found that someone was searching for tax sales in my area; I then wrote a blog about buying property at tax sale, and got a listing because of it (by someone who bought their property at tax sales.)

So while I may sound whiny and petty about this my whole point is to get business from my blog and to do that I need to know what my audience is searching for.  I really don't care HOW MANY visitors I have as much as WHY  OR HOW DID THEY COME TO MY BLOG.

1:08pm • #164

Brad I didn't even know what a widget was/is?  So thank you I'll goggle it and find out more to get up to speed,  I'm trying !   I think I can, I think I can !   Jane

Jane - I have a link in this post that will define a widget.  It's actually a video that will help explain a widget, how it works, and their purpose.  You can also Google it, you'll find a great deal of information that you'll find helpful in dealing with these little gadgets and gizmos.  -  I know you can, I know you can!  (wink wink)  :-)

1:17pm • #166

Karen - Thanks for your reply, and believe me, I really do understand and recognize the value of this widget.

You have made it very clear the value it brings to you and your blog.  We get that.  I am very sympathetic and wish there was more I could do, but by the same token, I hope you understand our position on this, and the risk we take by using these javascripts widgets as I explained above in an earlier comment to you.  This final decision to the best of my knowledge, is not a negotiable one. I apologize.

Thanks for understanding, and I say this with the utmost respect and confidence, we can and will find a widget or tool at some point that will get you the results you desire.  We are a very diverse community and network with many intelligent staff and resourceful members.  So have faith in the netowrk that you have entrusted all this time and up to this point.

In our search together, we can find solutions, let's try to move forward now and find resolve.  :-)

BTW - I like your idea, and maybe this is something our programmers can implement in the future: "What would be really helpful is if AR would implement stats like Wordpress.com has - on Wordpress your own visits to the blog are not counted when you are logged in, and it will tell you what search terms were used to find the blog, and it will give referrers. Then I wouldn't care about Statcounter being lost."

HI Brad, just wanted to let you know that I tried loading Google Analytics in my settings and I get an error that says I've exceeded 100 words...yikes :-)

Kris - here's why, you already have the max allowed text in that area of your my settings page.  You can move that text to another area, like to the other description box or to your profile, this will free up the space you'll need.

I just looked at your Blog and noticed all the text you have placed there.  Any HTML you add to your side bar does NOT count as text.  This should resolve your problem.  :-)  Let me know if you need some help.  :-)

Brad,

Thanks for putting mine back but quite frankly sometimes I'll go to someones blog and it takes forever to load the page...by the time it does...I'm gone...too many cause my PC to lock up...I think it is nice to have some as long as it is in moderation.

Neal - great point and I agree, mine I'm sure is one to include, and you're just being nice by putting it that way! LOL~  Moderation is the key, but value to your readers and visitors should be equally as important.

Thanks for waiting the time it took to load my blog so you could leave this comment.  You're a good man! :-)
