I keep telling my webmaster that she has to "dumb things down" for me.  Yeah, I can post to my blog and I know I need to use technology to be at the level I need to be, but don't ask me how to do it!  My job is selling real estate, not building websites or search engine optimization.  I need it, but I will hire people who know what they are doing and have them do it for me.

I got a wake up call tonight about how much we assume people know, and it was my sister who woke me up.  She emailed me to tell me that she had tried to post a comment on my blog, but couldn't figure out how to use the "spam thingy".  It is similar to the word we have to enter on AR before posting a comment, except on mine you have to add two numbers, like "2 +3". Then you enter "5" in the box and "post comment".  I emailed her back telling her how it worked (and couldn't resist a snide comment about not needing more than ten fingers to figure it out).   She is an artist, and can use photoshop which is beyond me, but couldn't figure that out.  Sometimes technology has a way of shutting us down as we just figure it is going to be too difficult, so we don't try.  I am guilty there....

I still have clients who don't use email.  It sure is inconvenient for me to have to call them about every little thing!  Sometimes I have to wait several hours for signatures while they go and find a fax machine.  I even have one or two that don't have a cell phone, although they are few and far between any more.  Even my 85 year old Dad has one now.  My market is a resort area and most of my clients live miles away, so technology really is a huge help to me.  My sister reminded me that we are all at different levels, and it is good for us to slow down and do it the old fashioned way every now and then.  I think they call it "back to basics".

Joanne, it can be frustrating when technology gets in our way... it always amazes me how easily we learn to depend on the newest gadget - remember when copiers just copied... wow look at what they can do now.

And cell phones used to be just for phone calls.  Luckily most of my clients are baby boomers and they don't text either.  But if I lived in a primary market, I bet I would be doing it too!

There is no doubt that more and more clients are becoming more and more tech saavy entailing the use of the internet, etc.  But there is still a HUGE client base out there that relies on 'old school'.....I think that pool will dwindle - albeit slowly, over time.  But it will take lots of time!

The old schoolers probably still have "12:00" flashing on their VCRs...wait, what's a VCR?  :)

We covered our 12:00 flashing on the VCR with a piece of electrical tape because it kept us awake at night.  ;-)

I love the internet and am hard pressed to remember what it was like when we first hooked -up years ago.  Back then you were charged by the minute because it required a special phone #.  But..... I still like to keep my active leads on index cards - paper index cards.

I still have index cards on my desk....they are faster to access than the computer if I am not in the program, and they are my paper backup, even though I have lots of redundancy and backups every night.  When the resident gremlin starts doing his thing (all computers have a resident gremlin) you never know what can go wrong!
