Today was my first day back in the office after the Thanksgiving Holiday. It was late in the morning when a client stopped by my office. He walked in far enough to close the door and stood there for a moment clutching his keys. He was having trouble finding his words, then he said in a low shakey voice: " I just thought you should know." He paused then swallowed hard and said "Linda died Saturday."
I couldn't believe my ears but I knew that I had heard him correctly. I said: "Larry, I'm so sorry. Is there anything I can do to help?" He shook his head no. His eyes teared up and he repeated: "I just thought you should know." Then with his head lowered he turned and left.
My heart went out to him. He and his wife had purchased their retirement dream home in July. They made some changes that required a light remodel, they redecorated, and personalized their new home with antiques, quilts, and memorabilia from times gone by. It had a very warm feeling with a country charm. He had just completed a new shop for his wood carving when Linda took ill. Before Thanksgiving it looked like she was getting better.
Their hopes for a full recovery and many happy years together in their dream home came to an end this Saturday. They had less than 4 months of happiness before Linda took ill and died. Now he begins another transition. One that many of us will have to make at some point in our lives.
Their experience has given me a renewed sense of Thanksgiving and a reminder to tell the people I love how much then mean to me. Our relationships are important to our sense of well being and to our happiness.
Please keep Larry and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
