THE ISLAND PACKET NEWSPAPER reported this morning that the rare and endangered RIGHT WHALES have recently been sighted approximately 13 miles offshore of Port Royal Sound. Some local residents were out in the Sound fishing when they heard the "whoosh" sound that whales make when emerging from the water. Upon further examination, they concluded they had just sighted the Right Whales.
According to the newspaper, it is not unusual for the whales to be migrating from north to south at this time of the year but to see these magnificient creatures this close to the island would certainly be a treat. It is estimated that only 300 Right Whales exist today because they were hunted to near extinction due to the fact they were so easy to hunt (a slow moving whale.) Today, they are no longer hunted and are protected but still face the danger of collision because they tend to hang out in shipping lanes.

Diane--When I have had the opportunity to visit the ocean (rare being in MN) the most memorable experiences are seeing such beautiful creatures like dolphins and manatees near shore. What an experience to see a whale...especially one that is endangered. I would also love that opportunity!
