A couple months back Gloriabelle wrote a controversial post called It's About Time Buyers Paid For Gas! At the time gas prices were hovering at $4/gallon.  Although Gloriabelle had a novel idea - have clients pay for our gas money.  Tthe reality is, at least in this area, we are responsible for the costs associated with showing our clients area homes.  As a result, Realtors and consumers started to cutback on their mileage which has impacted the State of North Carolina's revenue taxbase on gasoline.   With the shortfall in the budget some area leaders have proposed a new tax on vehicles based on annual mileage- A tax per mile driven.

The more you drive the more you pay!!  As a Realtor I put ~20,000 miles a year on my car.  The proposed tax would be between ¼ of a cent to ½ a cent and would be levied at the time of your annual car inspection.  In my scenario I would be paying between $200 and $500 per year if this proposal succeeds.  I'm glad that oil hit a record low of $50/barrel yesterday but I'm not about to propose that we start paying a tax for every mile we drive.

Does anyone else have a similar tax in their State?  This is outrageous!

Tracy, I haven't heard of anything like this, but then Realtors would be a TRUE taxi service.

I have yet to think of a tax that the government cannot levy.  However, I have yet to read of a single government person suggest eliminating any items from the budget of the state/city/town/community.

Fed - 18.4 cents per gallon

MD - 41.9 cents per gallon

VA - 38.0 cents per gallon

Gasoline in my area is hovering about $1.80 in rural areas and $2.05 in urban areas.

Tracy--Our state raised the gas tax earlier this year when when prices were on the rise. I think we are around $0.285/gallon and another 3.5 cents proposed. Thought that was terrible until I just saw Lenn's comment. Tax based on mileage driven is an interesting comment...How are they supposed to track that? What about rentals, taxis, school buses and trucking firms? What a nightmare idea!

Teri - they plan on checking Odomoters annually when you have your vehicle inspection done!!  They do this already in my state.

We don't do that here and I hope we don't. Like you I put 20K on my car every year. It use to be 30Kwhen I worked with buyers more. That would be horrible for Realtors and folks in my area who commute to Detroit and live 40 miles away.

I hear some politicians are thinking about increasing the gas tax so the money can be used for alternative fuels.  So we pay more, and the government gives it to big oil.

Susie, Tucson beckons!

Tracy,

The result of regressive taxes like this one will be a restructuring of society as people change their habits to avoid paying the taxman!  Thanks for posting this.

Tracy.... how about asking the politicians in your state to cut back on their golf memberships that are paid with tax payers money?  lol     And the more you drove? How about for the fact that people buying real estate sparks the economy in several ways. About giving the realtor a break on  this then, since they help out with the economy, when they sell homes.

Tracy, I heard that California was kicking that around several years ago due to the increased popularity of the hybrid cars cutting back on the gas tax revenue. Now I see it raises it ugly head in another fashion...
