Earth Issues - Decisions for leaders

Brad Inman asks a perplexing or perhaps compelling question: Do we care so much about the environment that we would prefer to see the poor stay poor?

While in India I too noticed the same he noticed in China. Literally millions of people lifted from extreme poverty ... but the means have caused severe environmental duress. Is this a decent trade off? Or, is there a mid-point balance that can be struck?

Hi Steve, the poor being lifted will be temporary when climate change really begins to kick in.  Those people will be without homes, and food, and of course jobs.  We will fare better in this country, for a while, then we too will be affected.  Climate change will see the extinction of hundreds of species that contribute to our ability to grow food.  The honey bees are already dying, what will pollinate our crops?  So, the poor are temporarily lifted from thier plight, but in the long run they will end up poor again, to join the billions of newly poor, created because of environmental devastation.

Terry, I'm challenged still by this entire thought process.  Is it our goal to pursue some greater good in 100 years.  Or is it our goal to improve the lives of people, to empower and equip humanity today?

Steve,

Tonight on NPR, I caught the end of a show on China. The Chinese plan to call the Olympics in 2008 the "green games" They have groups of people now using old anti-aircraft guns to seed clouds and remove pollution. A cab drive said in the 70's you could see blue sky and white clouds. Now there is just the haze of pollution.

Personal opinion, I don't think the lives of the people are being improved in China and some other developing cCountries. It's just simple greed by some business owners.

Interesting conversation. Long vision is so needed. Hard to keep that vision, unless you look through the eyes of your unborn great-grandchildren...
