Photo Courtesy of ColumbineEither way, I really don't care and I think it is a great idea, but can the American public accept the change that the United States Government has been trying to get accepted for the past 30 years?

On Friday, here in Portland, Oregon, the US Government parked an armored truck in the middle of Portland's Pioneer Square and had a money exchange. They were exchanging one dollar paper money for the new one dollar coins. They are billing them as better for the environment because they last longer and are 100% completely recyclable, but I hear it also will save the government some $5 billion dollars a year.

So, bring on the dollar coins, it has been working in Canada for years and they don't seem to be having any ill effects.

I believe the UK has something like that also. Well if it save some money and is better for the environment then go for it. Thanks for the blog. I have not read this.

I disagree that the US gov has been trying to be green for 30 years.  Carter was on to something with solar panels on the white house, but Reagan put the nix on that.

I hadn't heard about the coins, interesting idea.  Hope it sticks, especially if it saves $5 billion a year.

Interesting. But how exactly can we carry 20 bucks in 1 dollar increments and not have a hump on our back from the weight.

I hadn't heard anything about this . . and how appropriate that it would be happening in downtown Portland - a city that is lauded nationally about it's sustainability and green efforts.  The downside (in addition to the hump on our backs) is that those coins rattle around the bottom of my purse and are easily lost!

This will be interesting to see what happens in the future. One dollar coins haven't caught on here in the past.

Hi Todd!  That is very interesting to know that making the coins is cheaper than printing the paper $$.  I love the coins but, they are a bit heavy!

Hi Todd,

I wonder what the success effort will be. I would rather have paper because I never carry change on my person.

Stop the presses: Will the U.S. government now say that they are no longer "printing money"? Okay, bad joke.

Thanks for commenting on my blog Todd.
