Five tips for Seniors who choose to live in their current home a little longer.

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Centre Realtors

In many markets Seniors have decided to continue to live in the home and wait till the market improves. Some are counting on downsizing using part of the proceeds and depositng the balance in their bank accounts. Here are five minor changes that you can make to your home :

1. Use brighter lights in the house . Install motion detector lights outdoors. Trim bushes that can be a  hazard or those that are close to windows and doors.

2.Make sure all area rugs are fastened to the floor .

3.Install grab bars in bathrooms near the tub and toilet.

4.Install a tub seat.

5.Replace door knobs with lever door handles.

Hi Gita- I have those door levers, and you have to be careful cuz many times they will catch a part of your clothing as you pass through the door. This can be dangerous and irritating :)  Just thought I'd throw that in since I changed most of mine back to door knobs :)

Many folks do not want to give up the homes they have loved and lived in and are so familiar with.  In addition to installing a tub seat, another good idea is to have a walk-in shower installed and remove the tub completely, eliminating the need to make that big step in and out of the tub.

Also, make sure that there is SOMEONE who will check with you on a daily basis, just to say hello, and make sure you're okay.  This is important for ANYONE who lives alone, not just seniors.

Outside motion sensor lighting is really inexpensive to install (or have installed) and makes things sooo much safer!  I made sure my parents had motion sensors put outside their home when they scaled down to a smaller house.  Little things like that can make a big difference between feeling comfortable in your home or being afraid.
