Localism is Active Rain's sister website.   To know more about it, you can check the following post:  What is Localism?

Localism has lots of images of cities in the US and Canada that can be accessed from anywhere and any time to get a feel for the town.  It's like taking a virtual tour of a city.  This can be very helpful with those of you who have clients who are looking to relocate to a new town.   In this, my first post (I joined Active Rain on November 21, 2008), I would like to explain how to access and view pictures on Localism. It is very easy!

To View Pictures

1.     Go to www.localism.com .

You should then see a welcome screen similar to the following screen:

Localism Welcome Screen

2.     At the top right of your screen, you see a blue rectangle where there is a box:

Enter the name of the city and state you want to explore.

For our example, I will type Red Lodge, MT but you can type any city and state (for US) or city and province (for Canada).

Box where need to enter the name of city

3.     Click on the city's name you are interested in which appears in the area in blue.

Screen with name of the chosen city

You should see the page with the name of the chosen city appear and it will display a box containing one of the pictures previously uploaded on Localism.com (by any member of AR).  Please note that If you scroll down on the same page, you should also see (right under the picture box) a box with a Google map of the region where your city is located.

4.     Click on the + sign (on the top right hand corner of the first picture) to access all the uploaded pictures.

Screen to access all the pictures

5.     Use the right and left arrows <  > (near the top of the page) to scroll through the album and click on each picture separately to go through one picture at a time and read the description at the bottom of each picture.

Arrow under pictures with a link to AR profile

Note that under each picture (right below the description) is the link (person's name underlined in blue) to the AR profile of the member who uploaded the picture.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words!

Now that you know how to view pictures on Localism, what are you waiting for?  Go ahead and visit a new town or a city you would like to revisit in the US or Canada virtually from the comfort of your couch or chair!  You may want to check your own city to see what pictures are available.  If you do, chances are that you may also catch the Localism bug like me and decide to add some of the best pictures of your city to share with the rest of the world!

If you have never heard or never been to Red Lodge, go to Localism and take a virtual tour of Red Lodge, Montana!  You can click on the following link if you want to get there faster and skip the first 3 steps described above: http://localism.com/MT/red_lodge .  I hope the images (along with the brief descriptions) that I have displayed on Localism will give you a feel for Red Lodge and why I love where I live.

Please note that anyone can view the pictures on Localism.  However, only members of AR can upload pictures (your AR Username and Password will be required).   In my next post, I will explain how to upload pictures to Localism.

Thank you for visiting.  I look forward to your comments.

Gerry - Nicely done.  I have often felt privileged to get a chance to vicariously "visit" other parts of the country by way of my friends' posts, both here on AR and on Localism.

Jason,

Thank you for the positive feedback.   I will admit that I checked out several cities (both that I have visited in the past and that I was curious about) on Localism.  It is incredible the amount of info and pictures available on AR and on Localism on various cities in the US and Canada.

It's much like having your own personal tour guide anywhere in the country, which I suppose is part of the original vision for Localism in the first place.  With regard to Mihaela's question, I am going to guess that your heritage is Armenian, perhaps?

Mihaela,

I am glad I could be of help.   I am also hoping you will come back and check my next post and upload some beautiful pictures of Lahaina, HI.    Jason got it right as my heritage is indeed Armenian.   My parents' best friends were Armenians that grew up in Romania.

Gerry - I had an Armenian client a few years ago who mentioned that most Armenian last names end in "ian", so it stuck with me.  Have a great week!  Congrats on getting featured!

Gerry, I haven't looked at the photo's on localism in a long time. Great tutorial, I think it would make a good link for my signatures to incoming buyers.

Julie,

You are getting closer with Gary but I go by Gerry.   Localism is a good incentive for everyone who likes taking pictures to go around their town and take some quality photos to post them online and help further promote their city.   Thanks for visiting my post and have a wonderful Holiday as well.

Missy,

You are welcome!   I think that adding the link to Localism (with the photos of your city) to your email signature is a great idea.   It can only help with your marketing efforts.

Thanks for sharing Gerry!  I've ignored photos as a useful medium to get our company name/exposure out there, but it is a wonderful way to do so, and depending on the context, can often be far better than more lengthy blog posts!

Joel,

It is a pleasure to share info on AR as well as my passion for photography.  I am happy that I got you reacquainted with photos as an additional medium to get your company name/exposure out there.  They definitively appeal more to those who are visual.  The more different ways you can reach your target audience, the better.

I haven't paid that much attention to the localism photos...thank you for sharing!

Brad,

Thank you for all the positive comments.  Wow!  This is my first post and I was very thrilled to find out that it made it as a feature.  I am a newbie who is enjoying the AR community.   I hope all the readers see the marketing potential in Localism and make more use of AR's sister website.  I am looking forward to posting a couple more posts on Localism to share further ideas and info.

Julie,

All the photos that are uploaded to Localism should be available for viewing.  I am not aware of old photos or any photos being removed by anyone other than the person who uploaded them unless there was a quality issue with the photos and they did not represent what Localism allows to be displayed as photo.  Did you check right after uploading your photos each month, if you can view them to make sure they got uploaded alright?   I will be writing about how to upload pictures in Localism in my next post (it may answer your question then but if not, feel free to get back to me and we will get to the bottom of this).

Joan,

I agree that it takes some time to upload pictures especially if you uploaded 42 pictures like I did in one day but it is time well spent.  It looks like you may have caught the Localism bug.   I also plan to add new pictures of Red Lodge from time time.  There are lots of great opportunities to capture some great nature photos in and around town.   Photography is kind of like a hobby for me and I like sharing pictures.

Does anyone have any information about how many visitors go to localism.com? I look at other cities and the stuff looks great but when I do local searches, I just get individual agents posts, but not the search page.

Where there is an area that is underserved, there is an opportunity.   Get the info out and continue to participate in the localism areas around your market and you will likely be rewarded for your efforts.

Sandy,

I am hoping the community founder behind Localism sees your question and can post the answer.  I will be interested myself to know if they are have the tools in place on Localism to keep track of the number of visitors overall and a breakdown by State would be interesting too.   I am not sure what determines the results of a local search to return individual agent blogs rather than the search page but you can directly go to the search page on Localism as described in my post.

Pam,

This is indeed my first post.   The idea for this post was in my head for several days and I am glad I finally got around to posting it.   The temptation to write a quick introduction post was my initial thought to break the ice (or get wet in the Rain) but I am glad to have taken the time to come up with something that could be of value to others and at the same time was a great learning experience from me.   I want to thank the members who wrote the several tips I read prior to my post to get set up on AR and build up my confidence to start my blog.

The second post is under way and I plan to have it up on AR within the next week.   The part that takes the most time is incorporating pictures of the different steps when it comes to uploading the photos but I will take the necessary time to make the tutorial easy to follow and with quality info.

Bruce and Mary,

You are welcome!   If you need any advice on what to do and where to go when you are in Red Lodge, feel free to give me a call.  A good website to check and get more info about the town is www.redlodge.com.   From this website, you can download and view a travel planner as well as check out a webcam on the main street (Broadway Ave) and another webcam on Red Lodge Mountain (ski resort).  I have been to SC but have not heard of McCormick.   I checked Localism, saw they had 13 pictures of it and did notice that you had uploaded 3 of them (I will show how to add a brief description at the bottom of the pictures in my next post; it is very easy).  I love the aerial views!

Lee and Pamela,

Thank you for moseying over and checking out my blog.  I am from ville Saint-Laurent (area central North of the island of Montreal).   Funny that you asked me the question since I wrote my second post from Saint-Laurent where I am currently visiting my folks for a week.   Rosemère is a lovely city.   I am now curious to go check and see if they have pictures of it on Localism so that you can perhaps revisit it (virtually) and bring back some good memories.   Merci pour les commentaires positifs.

Greg,

I visited some nices towns myself on Localism from the comfort of my couch since I made this post.   It is always interesting to check pictures of the towns and cities of some of the people who commented on here and that I was not too familiar with.   Not sure what the traffic is like on Localism but my thinking is that even the slightest traffic increases the chance of being found online and getting additional business.
