Sports has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I think back on all the fun times that I had both as a player and a coach. I have coached everything from 6-7 year olds to full grown adults. I have to tell you, it is a lot more fun and rewarding working with the children as opposed to the adults. I especially liked working with kids and helping them develop into pitchers. It is kind of funny that a lot of people can teach a player how to hit, but few can teach the art of pitching.

I can remember back in the early 90's living in Florida. I was working with 15-18 year olds at that time and helping develop their pitching skills. I ran across this one kid that I thought was a phenom. My assistant coach and I would have discussions on just how hard this kid could throw. Now, I took pride back then at being able to turn anyone's fastball around. If it was straight, I could hit. If it curved, let's just hope that you did not hang it.

Anyway, back to this kid. After whizzing a few by me in warm ups, I wanted to know what this kid had. My assistant coach just happened to be a police office and had a radar gun in his car. He got it out and we decided to clock the kid. I think this must have fired the kid up because he unloaded to the plate and broke the 90 MPH mark a few times.

I was so shocked that a 17 year old had that much juice in his arm. The bad thing was, his head was not in the right place. A few days later, my assistant coach was picking him up for armed robbery. It was a sad day for our team.

sad story Danny in your post -so many players make mistakes after the big contract signing - but to see a youngster with such potential squelch it at a young age getting a criminal record will prevent all future offers.... hey speaking of coaching, over thanksgiving Jeff's family gave up Colts tickets to us ( yea - i want to see that new stadium) - no one wanted to see them play last place Detroit... LOL - Jeff said he may want to send his resume in to them (Lions)they need some new coaches :)

Hope your thanksgiving was swell !

Sincerely,

Grace

Danny, too many people waste their talent when they don't realize what they have.

I used to run cross country in Jr. High and High School and there was this kid, I liked, but knew he was troubled. He was a better runner than me, but he wasn't running for the team, I had seen this kid run! So I invited him out and he quickly became number one with in a week, but two weeks later like your kid was in jail and never was to be heard from again. It really was sad, because I knew he could have been great.

Danny, how true. Talent alone does not make the player or the career. Sometimes after success, we've all seen players in many sports implode. See my post http://activerain.com/blogsview/817736/Plaxico-what-were-you-thinking for an example of a story familiar to you about one of our Giants.

Jeff and Grace, that it is.

Fred, I have seen too many do it. My knees gave out, other people take themselves out of it.

Todd, that is one thing that plaques the youth of today.

Jim, heading there now.

Boy is that a sad story!  What a waste!  It must be rewarding for you to try to be in a postition to be a postitive influence on our youth.  I applaud your efforts we need more people to coach and mentor our children.  Most kids really feed off of those relationships and on the whole most kids need it....

Ted, I could not agree more. I was watching CSI: Miami last night and the story line was based on a kid trying to get out of the reaches of the gang. Instead, it turned out that he was the killer.
