It's funny, isn't it? I saw this article a while back on a sarcastic website called The Onion. Usually the stories are really fun to read and the give me a nice pick up when they come out every Wednesday.
This one struck me a little different though. It actually makes a whole lot of sense, doesn't it? But it got me thinking...how many people out there actually waste time away, especially in the real estate business, on a daily basis? How many people spend time on tasks that are really meaningless instead of doing what brings in business?
I can tell you that I'm a victim of it myself. There are times when I just wish I wasn't there to deal with the everyday tasks that need to be done. The reality is that it is tough to be "on" all the time. Coming to this realization has actually been a turning point in my career. I seem to work less hours because if I find myself wandering, I trigger something in my brain that says, "start doing what makes business happen".
Even though someone important finally came out and said that we are in a recession, we all knew it was coming for months (at least I hope you did). Each and everyone of us is responsible for making business happen. For me, it's continuously trying to work on building new relationships and making the ones that I have more meaningful. Business, for the most part, doesn't just walk in the door right now. You have to be proactive and go get it done for your business to make money.
There's a saying that I've heard that goes like this..."Be the change that you want to see in the world". In a commission only business like this one, this resonates deeply. If you aren't producing, take a look at your daily routine, and be the change that you want to see in your business. I guarantee that when you start focusing on the tasks that get you business, you will see your income increase over time.

Great reminder Jeff, I use the old saying, "If you alway do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got." I'll work on income producing tasks first!
