I got to thinking the other day after I spoke with a buddy of mine who gave me some figures about that $700 billion dollar bailout passed by Congress last month.  He said, that instead of giving the money to the banks to essentially "do what they want", why not divide that up amongst every taxpayer in this country.  He proceeded to tell me that each taxpayer could get $275,000 per person with that amount of money.

He's not quite correct in his assumptions.  To find out the amount of money per person, take $700,000,000,000 and divide that by the number of US taxpayers which is about 140,000,000 people.  In doing so, you get approximately $5000 per individual.  I don't know about you, but if you gave me $5000(and my wife $5,000) we'd be wallking away with $10,000.  I guarentee that you could get the economy churning again, just by giving people a piece of the pie instead of letting the banks bail themselves out of an overindulgent mess.

Wouldn't that be nice!

10 grand per couple of taxpayers would help.  But the corps may be the way to go because they can amplify that 700B into more by using tax write offs and other accounting practices that will allow them to take losses we can't.  But if you offered me 10K today, I'd take it and so would a lot of people.

It WOULD be nice but that is the same as the stimulus checks that were sent this last spring. And I don't remember hearing that that did any significant amount of good for the economy.

Of course getting a free handout is great but I don't want to get money from the government and then have to pay it back in the end (which is exactly what we are going to have to do). We need to implement some REAL change in our system. Socialism is not going to solve anything- it's just going to get us into deeper debt!

Jeff:  What a noble idea.  Help the VOTERS.  I like it.  These corporations come with their hands out constantly.  And in giving them money, it's probably going to become the norm whenever there is a hiccup.  It's ridiculous.

I was watching Lewis Black last night from a show in 2004 commenting on Bush's stimulus plan of giving back $400 to people then. It was really shocking. He pointed out that $400 is about a dollar a day with a $35 bonus at the end and basically what on earth good would that do? Obviously it didnt work then. What was ironic is that Black was proposing that we do a large publics work project which is basically what Obama intends to do. I am not trying to be pro-Obama but rather pointing out that 4 years ago we had this same problem and had solutions then and no one did a thing. Certainly $5000 is a lot more than $400 but would it be more effective than getting people jobs?
