Establishing an Internet Presence: "Are You Creating a 'False Front?"

By

During a recent meeting with one of our local real estate offices, a question came up about how to create an effective Internet presence through the use of social media/networks. A comment was made about how many profile pictures are out-dated, and give an 'inaccurate' representation of the particular person.

It reminded me of the time when I had just begun my real estate career back in Kansas (please, no 'Wizard of Oz' jokes). There was a female agent in a competing office who advertised rather aggressively through printed media, billboards, and even the screen at the local movie theater. There was always an ongoing debate as to whether her glamor shots had been re-touched or enhanced. I remember the first time I met this agent in person. I was having coffee at a local haunt, when a fellow agent pointed her out. My reaction was somewhat embarrassing. It was the first time in my life that I had 'sprayed' someone in a public place. To say that she bore absolutely no resemblance to her ad shots would be an gross understatement. It was a very stark contrast between a 'created' image versus the 'real deal.'

Back in the booming Gold Rush Days, towns went up literally overnight. Rather than investing in strong, permanent structures, owners would construct 'false fronts' to provide an attractive visual aesthetic for their place of business. Many times, behind the alluring 'false front,' was a weathered, run-down shell that lacked strength or substance.

As you invest the time, energy, and resources to create and enhance your Internet presence/image, does it reflect who you are in 'real-life?' When you engage people in conversations on your blog, are they reading 'Your' own unique thoughts, words, and opinions? When you finally meet your clients in person, face-to-face, what kind of reaction will you invoke?

Good to see opinions which actually convey a bit more than just marketing innuendo.

Thank you for the common sense, as it certainly helps...

Great post and funny comments too!

I've met a few agents who have a striking difference to their real image.  We were just discussing this at our meeting- making sure to update all of your online info if you change companies.  One of the agents googled herself and the info that came up was directing clients to her old company!

Google yourself and see what you find.

Yes, just like most of us update our blog.  We from time to time need to update our photos.  But the question is when is a good time to do it?   I mean, how old must a photo be before an update is needed?

Well Rick I must be doing OK because when people meet they always say I look exactly like my picture.  Unless of course they are meeting me when I am horse camping and I have a pony tail, ball cap, and horse poo on my shoe . . lol

Rich - This makes me laugh as I think of a local agent that we joke around about. She must be 60 years old and still using what almost seems to be her high school senior photo!

I wear glasses most of the time when I have my contacts in.  Weird, I know.  The result is that only my family and closest friends ever see me without my glasses.  Yet my business pictures all show me without glasses.

Should I be wearing my glasses in my business pictures?

The "glasses" or "no glasses" question - - I struggled with that also.  In the office, doing deskwork, I don't wear my glasses.  But, when I'm driving, or just out and about, if I want to see where I'm going and recognize people walking towards me, I have to wear my glasses.  Because I want people to recognize me when I'm out and about, I chose to wear my glasses in my photo - - I find I look quite different without them!  Something else, and I don't want to hear a bunch of flack from non-sight-impaired blondes, but - - I have an MBA and over 30 years of business experience - - I am also a blonde who has had to prove I have a brain on many occassions during those 30 years, and I think the glasses make me look smarter!  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

This is so true! I see agents using glamor shots taken 10-15 years ago! Good topic and post.

Rich, I'm sorry I didn't get to wittness that spraying reaction! It is amazing the facade that many put up. I've never been one to put a picture on my cards...I have a billboard that has no face and so on. I want people choosing to work with me based upon my successes and word of mouth in opposed to my glamor shot. Which btw, I do have stuffed in a drawer...ugh. I keep trying to look like that again but my hair won't get big enough! LOL. Drop by and see me sometime.

Way to go Rich! Ones professional image should be current as we are dealing with the public on a daily basis. Name and face recognition is not reserved for politicians only. For me it a real compliment to be in a checkout line in Fayetteville, NC, and have a total stranger address me as "Clark Cook". That would not happen if I used my high school picture in my promotions.

I still don't know why people would use an old photo of themselves. I think it would be embarrassing.

Not just pictures, does what you post in your blogs reflect who you really are. We have to remember that we can't be everyting to every people. And at the end, I think people expect to see real people.
