Remember Wordless Wednesday???

By
Real Estate Agent with Fathom Realty Washington LLC

I love the photos displayed on Wordless Wednesday posts. We have some true artists with their digital cameras. I just knew we would find another use for those expensive little cameras rather than just pictures of houses.

None the less I had never posted any of my photos until this week because I felt the quality wasn't up to par with my peers here on ActiveRain.

I posted this photo and immediately got a call from a lawyer friend of mine who said you better restrict the use of your photo or you will be paying for it. I told him I thought Wordless Wednesday was just that, Wordless. He told me to look at the other photos.

What I found was;

  1. Several of the posts had no restrictions...
  2. Several had descriptions far longer than some of the posts on AR...
  3. That the words Wordless Wednesday should be just that along with restrictions of use. (This will promote comments from those of us who want to know more about the art.)

I really like the idea of Wordless Wednesday and hope it endures the test of time...

What are your feelings?

I too like the photos.  Never thought of the restriction issue.

Paul, what is the restriction issue?  Not sure I follow---how do lawyers get involved----it is your picture after all isn't it?

Paul was your lawyer friend referring to copyright restrictions for future use of your photo by other people?

Mark and Charles,Michael, My lawyer friend offered this; with no language restricting the use of your photo it can be used in anyway one can imagination. You may see it on the side of a bus with someone else credit on the bottom of it.

I had posted my picture with nothing on it and thus is why my friend, the lawyer, told me to protect it with restrictions of use...

I have to many other things to worry about than somebody using my photo for free.  I don't want to chase people down and sue them over a photo I took.

Unless you are using the photo to make money or if you really care for people to know who authored it, then it probably shouldn't matter too much. There are thousands of photos out there.

The way I feel about is that it is my photo and even with the restrictions, you still are going to be hiring lawyers if someone uses it without permission----if you care that much.  For me I just plain don't have that much "invested" in the pictures I take----they are after all just a bunch of pixels:)

I would say lightly watermark your photo with your domain if it really bugs ya.  Photos contain EXIF information (when it was taken) and you can probably prove your rights to it if you had to!

Paul,

See what happens when lawyers get involved? Just post your picture with a copyright notice or not and don't worry about it. I don't. :)

I didn't see the photo you pulled, I think wordless Wednesday is a good idea to find ways to express yourself in a pictorial manor.

Paul-

I haven't read any restrictions on the description or the lengths of the description that goes with a photo.  Is there something I am missing here?  One would think a serious photographer would know to copyright anything before posting.  Anyway, everything in the world shouldn't have to be this complicated!

Paul... I noticed many pictures on Wednesday with the title 'wordless Wednesday'.  Where did it start and is there a reason behind it?

John, I don't know when it started (maybe somebody can answer that for us) but I just know it started before I joined AR. I know I enjoy the art some of the members display but never felt my photo met the level of expertise that I have enjoyed. Basically you just display a picture you want to share, If you want to protect it, read what others have commented...

Oh goodness, if someone likes my photos of Hilton Head, I'll be happy they are providing free advertising for the area.  I'm not too worried about my own photos.  It's not like I'm using children or people in my photos.

Paul, I don't know who started this idea, but I LOVE the photos I'm seeing. I'm actually doing a search to find the ones that have been posted. ;-)
