Oh the Things That We Do!

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Cape Cod and the Islands

It has been a challenging year and every Realtor has had to put out extra effort just to keep up. Every sale this year has been unique and many have required something that would normally not be considered part of a Realtor's job. Here are the highlights of my list:

  • Helping an elderly seller burn off the gas in an undergroud tank so that it could be hauled away before the closing.
  • Replacing rotted floor boards and painting a deck for an elderly client.
  • Removing a stump (at the buyer's request).
  • Raking leaves and cutting the grass to make a "distressed" property look better.
  • Hauling away trash (on several occasions).
  • Conducting a combined open house and art sale
  • Conducting a combined open house and antique sale

And this does not take into account that the average buyer is looking at 18+ houses before making a decision.

It might make interesting reading if some fellow realtors would share their most unusual "Extra Service" from 2008. I'm sure that my list pales in comparison to many.

Fall is still a beautiful time of year on Cape Cod.

I have only done the usual "extra" services this year...........painted walls and trim in several homes, cleaned entire homes with bottles of Chlorox Clean-Up(gosh they needed it) did the usual lawn service at several homes, hired a tree service to cut down the largest tree I've ever seen in my life and babysat that project while the buyer remained out of state after closing, caulked many cracks in many homes, used my water key to turn off water that had severely damaged a hardwood entry, killed poison ivy, and the list could continue!

We do what we have to do to get the properties sold or let them sit there and waste our time!

Linda and Tinker:

Thanks for the comments. You are so right: It's just part of the job.

Great post - All to many times the "extras" go unnoticed, especially by the sellers and buyers. Waiting 6 hours for the Electric company. cleaning floors, shoveling snow. Good luck and have a Christmas.

I actually had one woman who thought I should have broken into her shed and gotten out her rider mower and mowed her lawn.  Once I new I could use her rider mower I was more than happy to but I thought it was funny that she would assume that I would use her property without speaking with her....
