Consumer Reports rated cell phone service throughout 23 major metropolitan areas across the country.  The cell phone companies rated were Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Alltel and Sprint.

The cities rating Verizonas the best service are:  Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Denver, Detroit, Jacksonville, Fla., Las Vegas, LA, Miami, Minneapolis-St. Paul, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis and Washington.

The cities rating Alltel as the best service are:  Charlotte, N.C., Cleveland and Tampa, Fla.

All 23 cities rated Sprint as the lowest.  It looks like a landslide for Verizon as the big overall winner.

As far as customer service... here's the results:

  1. Verizon
  2. Alltel
  3. T-Mobile
  4. AT&T
  5. Sprint (last place again)

I'm so glad that I'm a sprint customer.  When my contract is up, I may be making a change.

What cell phone service do you have and how would you rate them on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best?

Here is South Florida Sprint gets the best reception. Friends with verizon sound like they're under water! I guess it has to do with tower location.

Colleen - This was a survey of Consumer Reports subscribers.  I haven't had many issues with Sprint which is why I've been with them for so long.

Personally, I didnt think Verizon had good customer service at all.  I had issues with my phone and they were never resolved.  After several weeks, I finally switched to AT&T.  I have not had any major issues, but for the ones I have had, they handled the problem quickly and painlessly.

Hi Dave - I have Sprint but have not found many issues. Reception is always pretty decent.

I have Spirnt as well.  I recently read that they are losing tons of customers every quarter.  I guess the customer service plays a big part in that.  I moved to the $99 "all you can eat" plan when it came out earlier this year.  I don't know if the other carriers have matched that offer.

I have ATT (formerly Cingular) and the service has been pretty reliable. Plus the roll over minutes are a plus.

I have my Blackberry with T-Mobile (we get discounts on plans and equipment through KW) and have been very happy with the service.

David, I was with Sprint for many years and had great service here in the Sacramento area as well as in Mexico and Hawaii.  However, I decided I wanted the "STORM" that Verizon was the only one offering and I made the switch this month.  So far I am very pleased.

I had 2 phones with Sprint with unlimited calls and was paying well over $200/mo. Now, I'm down to one phone and my bill will be $150 so I'm saving money for a change.

David, I've actually been very pleased with Sprint.  Our son is in his second tour of Iraq and they have been wonderful about putting his phone on military rest and taking it off for the month when he gets his R & R.  For the most part I get good receiption just about anywhere also.

I have US Cellular - which did not even make the cut! I am in central Missouri and US Cellular does NOT share their towers with other providers. I had AT&T and when I bought a house in the country I didn't get service. AT&T released me from my contract because they told me that I was in a "white-out zone that ONLY US Cellular can reach." Sounds a little monopolizing to me.
