What Do I Do During a Flood?

Services for Real Estate Pros with HO Insurance

In the event of a flood, there are certain things to do in order to keep yourself and/or your family safe. If there’s only a warning of a flood, be sure to listen to the news or check online so you’ll know the conditions and if you need to evacuate.

If things start looking too dangerous and there is still no news to evacuate, it’s best to move to higher ground. If there’s time, try to collect any of your things from outside and bring them into your home. As for inside, if you have two storeys, take all valuables you can upstairs, as well as water, food, hygiene items, flashlights, batteries, phones, and medicine. Be sure to unplug everything and switch off the fuse box, but be careful not to touch anything electric if you’re standing in water.

If it gets to the point where you must leave your home, be careful about walking in water that’s rushing. If it’s going to fast, you can easily fall. Never drive into flooded areas, and if the water has risen around your car, it’s best to leave it and get to a higher place. When driving in a flooded area, remember that a foot of water will “float” many vehicles.
