Florida Real Esate Broker 407-873-2747 Hello fellow Rainers! This is going to be one of those post that has been flopping around in my head for a few days. Not quite sure how it's going to turn out but I think there's going to be a point in here somewhere. So please bear with me. Sometimes I just have to get it out of my head. OK, since I don't really know how to start this, I'm just going to jump in and use myself as an example.

"I feel so lucky today! Business is booming and as lady luck would have it, I am in the right place at the right time, to take advantage of it. My "popularity" is growing by leaps and bounds on ActiveRain and I have managed to get into the right "cliques" so that all of my posts get featured and folks line up to leave comments. I must have been born with a silver spoon in my mouth and it seems my 15 minutes of fame has extended into a lifetime. I am soooooo lucky".

Have you ever looked at someone else's success and thought how "lucky" they were? Or, made a comment about a Blogger on ActiveRain, about how their posts are always featured and it must be because they know the right people or they are featured because they are "popular"?

Did you know, successful people rarely, if ever, have thoughts like these? By these, I mean, the ones in the 2nd AND 3rd paragraphs. Most successful people have a strong work ethic and have spent many years honing their craft to achieve "over night success". Most successful REALTORS® have spent many years prospecting and studying market conditions to be able to get "lucky" and be in the right place at the right time. "Popular" Bloggers on ActiveRain have also put in the time, done the research and studied the market(AR) in order to become "popular" and get into the right "clique".

Lady Luck has nothing to do with success. You may get lucky and have short term success but you cannot achieve long term success this way. You have to have a plan and you have to stick to it. The same applies to ActiveRain. Being popular or being part of the right clique will not give you lasting success. You have to be willing to share and give folks information they can use. You have to be consistent.

So, maybe if you are not having the success you feel you deserve. Then check your attitude first. Secondly, devise a plan and stick to it. Success in anything takes careful planning and persistency.

Check your vocabulary. Change:

  • Luck to hard work
  • Clique to niche
  • Popular to trustworthy

Work hard towards becoming the expert in your niche and build trust by being honest and dependable. By doing this you may find yourself being "popular" and in the right "clique" and before you know it, your "luck" will change. To me, ActiveRain is just like real estate or life for that matter. I would venture to say that the "popular" Bloggers on ActiveRain are, or will be, successful in their businesses as well.

OK, I just reread this post and I'm not sure I got my point across. Maybe I'll get lucky. It sure sounded good when it was my head. Oh well, I'm throwing it out there anyway. Sometimes you just have to go for it. Maybe, you DID get my point. Did you? Does your success depend on Lady Luck?

Hi Bryant, interesting post...I've always subscribed to a couple of sayings:  "The harder I work, the luckier i get"   and "Luck is just preparation meeting opportunity"

Bryant, in answer to your final question, never, I never rely on lady luck. It is inefficient and wastwe of time and energy. It is a mindset, a plan and finally action to seal the deal.

Great post!

I got your point and I agree.  Being envious or concerning yourself at all with other people and what they do or don't do is a waste of time.  Having your own plan, being productive and consistent is what works.  It is not being popular that is the point.  People read your posts because they are well written, informative and intelligent it is the other way around.

I think if we all focus on what we CAN control (our behaviour, our actions, and our attitude) and less about what we can't (other people's success, or "luck")  we'd all be one step closer to the success we DESERVE after putting up with this crazy market the last 2 years!

BB - I've always related to your posts but this one even more so.  The success of my business(I'm up substantially in 2008) has been hard earned and my expertise in "niche marketing" has helped me thrive in a down market.

Do I think I am lucky?

I think not.  I'm a savvy Realtor in a difficult market w/a fabulous marketing message that ressonates w/my clients.  In addition, I have the work ethic that clients are looking for in order to sell their home.

Therefore, I don't resonate w/luck and being popular.  Only hard work and expertise wins clients in this market.

Hi Broker B- well, I've been reading your blogs for a couple years now, and one thing I can say is that you are a testament to adapting to the market and making it work! BB, I LIKE feeling "lucky" sometimes. It's better than feeling deserving when it comes out of nowhere, as luck tends to- a little more fun. On the other hand, some things certainly have a whole lot more behind them than luck, and it's insulting for efforts requiring a whole lot more than luck to be minimized into a four letter word.

Worthy of a Gold Star! As humans, we always compare what we know of ourselves with what we dont of others.

I understand what you mean about hard work. It takes years to build and we live in a microwave society now. We want INSTANT SUCCESS.

I certainly agree that hard work and persistance is typically rewarded with success. I admit that my view has changed somewhat over the past year as so many who have the right attitude and diligence are NOT being rewarded as reliably as they were in years past. That leaves me feeling that in some cases, a little luck is also involved. I don't like it, but I'm having a hard time ignoring the growing evidence.

Now, as to the whiners, I think it's the same as it's always been.... ENVY. We all feel it in one way or another, but better to keep it to ourselves and find a way to be happy for the success of others. Or better yet, just focus on your own goals and leave the bitterness to those with little desire to make their own way.

5:55pm • #23

I was just talking about this today.  One of my friends sold $30 million this year and I asked him what he attributed it to.  He said, "luck."  I said, "No way".  If you aren't prepared for the opportunity when it arrives, you won't be "lucky."  He is smart and is very good at what he does and combined with being in front of the right people at the right time, he'll get "lucky" a lot!

No, I am blessed. I know it. And I work damn hard. I worked today from 7:30 am to 7 pm. I walked in the door at 7:30 and sat down to a cold dinner. I'm working my tail off, and I AM SUCCESSFUL. Not lucky.

@TBoard is rocking with her sarcasm today. Very funny!

I think this is a self confidence issue.  I could care less who is number 1, or number 100.  It is not relevant to closing transactions.  I have been on here for over a year, am not in the clique and got 4 new clients off of my blogs the week of Thanksgiving.  This is the "slow" season.

Not everyone writes well and some people express their thoughts better than others. As such, they get featured more.  Are there some bloggers "ignored" even with good solid writing...probably, but I don't understand why they care.  I would not be on AR if I wasn't trying to make money from it.  The gold star is nice, but I'll take the $30,000 potential income for January over the gold star...ANY day.

Read...Learn...Implement...and when ready...Give back and share.

Bryant, this was my first time reading your blog as I am new to blogging...I love your ability to adapt...I too have had to remake myself to the changing market conditions...My background is as a Senior Loan Officer/Processor.  As a note, to give you and your readers that additional edge in the current market...Debt settlement is the most viable way to improve the closing percentage of your hard earned sales!  With underwriters afraid to sign their names on loans, it becomes imperitive to improve the loan package and one of the best ways to do that is to improve the DEBT RATIOS!  By encouraging the buyers to use some of their down payment money you will dramatically improve your closing numbers!  I am not talking about Credit Card Counseling which is viewed by underwriters as a chapter 13 BK (a reorganization of debt), or debt consolidation which only adds to the amount of debt with additional interest.  But the most effective way to actually relieve a debt load by negotiating down the balances and the interest and reducing or eliminating the penalties!  In some cases the debt can be reduced by 75%!

My partner and I pride ourselves on having impeccable reputations!  We also offer a free workshop to our clients to teach behavior modification techniques so that families do not get right back into debt!

We have made it our mission to re-educate the public and are determined to change the attitude "buy now, pay later"

Thank you for allowing me this forum to vent!

In most cases, "luck" comes to those who've worked to be ready for it. It's like a seller questioning, why should you get paid so much for showing my house once and selling it the first week? Because I've spent 20+ years knowing who to call to show it to, and how to get interest to a contract and closing. - just a Founding Bloggers thought.....and no, I'm not ready to leave.

Bryant,

I do believe in Karma, so putting out good work, working smart, giving first to others, remembering it's about them and not about you....that's putting it out there and the karma that comes back, it's bound to be good.

Does that make successful people lucky?  No, but it does make them more grateful:-)  You are right, lady luck and envy have nothing to do with good work and success.

Bryant- You see, there you go again:) Lucky you, another gold star! hee hee, :)

I can tell anyone that it is not hard work, just a lot of work to get to where we are on Active Rain and in our businesses. We don't just create all these posts through osmosis. We actually sit and research, study and get the images, write the posts and make sure they are good posts. That is why they get featured. Not being in the right crowd. I did not know anyone when I first joined AR. I started helping right away, day one post- I am here to pay it forward.

If any one feels alone or that they are not lucky, then reach out and help someone in the rain. Don't think about yourself, think about how you can contribute to the community. Then you will get noticed, it is not luck.

Hi BB, I have always believed that the harder I work, the liuckier I get.  But you are right.  It takes persistence and consistency and working smart, not just hard.  And a great attitude goes a long way toward success.  Some success coaches tell you to put in the necessary work, and to tell yourself you are already successful even before you actually are.  Start believing it, and you have a different air about you and success will come to you.

P.S.  Love the illustration.  Who's the artist?  That balloon sure looks like someone I know.  Let's see -- who could it be?

Heads UP...

I recently watched a news story about a woman who won our Florida Lottery several years ago. She won millions and managed to spend the millions in just a few years. She is now trying to collect disability and was video taped outside her home being every thing except disabled. Was she Lucky? Of course. Did she know how to conduct herself once she had piles of cash? Nope. The story spoke volumes to me about Lady Luck.

By the way...Does anyone know who decided Luck should be a feminine concept? I've always wondered who decided Luck was a Lady :)

Well good morning everyone!!! Really great comments. I just read each and every one of them with my coffee. This Comment from Jennifer Bukaty really stood out for me:

"I  admit that my view has changed somewhat over the past year as so many who have the right attitude and diligence are NOT being rewarded as reliably as they were in years past"

Jennifer's comment brings up a very good point. It doesn't matter how hard you work or how good your attitude is you still MUST be focused on the right actions. In this current market there are folks who are working their asses of BUT they are doing the wrong things. So instead of succeeding they are creating stress and frustration. They're swimming upstream chasing a business model that will not work today.

The first step is to figure out where the market is going and then make a plan on how to get there first. This market requires new skills and will for years to come.

AR is the exact same way. I have been here since we only had about 600 members. AR has gone through many stages of growth and is constantly changing directions. My approach to AR has changed several times and is always evolving based on the direction I see AR going. Every post I write is written for a reason. They are not just random thoughts.

Katerina Gasset said it very well in her comment:

"If any one feels alone or that they are not lucky, then reach out and help someone in the rain. Don't think about yourself, think about how you can contribute to the community. Then you will get noticed, it is not luck"

It's ALL about helping others. The more people you help the more success you will have. That's the way the universe works. OK I have to go show houses today. I'll be back.

BB,

No one shot wonders...you have to put time in no matter what you do. If you get lucky you might a few bones thrown to you but  that ain't going to last forever. You want your cake and eat it too....then go out to the store...buy the ingredients first then help mix them and cook them...but don't forget that if the cake comes out good...you still need to clean up the mess instead of leaving it all over the counter.

Luck? I didn't lucky in High School and I don't get lucky now... I have a plan, I work that plan and if I succeed it is because my plan was the right one! If it doesn't work, change the plan, work the plan until I succeed. LATHER, RINSE AND REPEAT!

Hi Bryant,

I agree completely.

Success that appears to be "overnight" has been years in the making.

Now I do think there is a way to shorten the learning curve by modeling others that have already done what you want to do - but that doesn't change the fact that it is still going to take a heck a lot of persistence to be "lucky". :)

I have to agree with TLW...I have never believed in " lady luck " I believe our success in whatever area is what we make of it. I can be money poor but family rich sort of thing. Everything is what we make of it and hard work goes a very long way.

How is TLW btw. I have been meaning to contact you guys but I have been running back and forth to specialist for my daughter trying to find answers on why she has been so sick. I hope all is well and that TLW is back to kicking your rump...lmao !

Luck is when preparedness meets opportunity, neither of these situations occur without hard work. Opportunity is the really difficult part in todays market. If it presents itself because you have worked your butt off....

I think you got your point across.  It seems this impression occurs with many "celebrities" who gain "overnight success".

Bryant - I am jealous of the featured posts, but in a good way, it motivates me to prospect, .... and remember the old saying, its amazing how lucky you get the harder you work!

WOW! For not knowing where you were going...you should did a great job of getting there...and leading the rest of us as well. NOT ONLY do I whole-heartedly agree with you...I've said these same words to many people many times. Luck will NEVER propel you to success in anything. Like you said, "Most successful REALTORS® have spent many years prospecting and studying market conditions to be able to get "lucky" and be in the right place at the right time."

When I was the broker in charge, I always told new agents to watch what 'lucky' people do. They are the ones who are in the office before everyone else and the last one to leave. They don't spend the whole day standing around goofing off...because they have a plan. Some get it...most don't. They can never say I did not tell them. :-) LOVE THIS POST!! GBU~

Great Post, got your point.  Luck is working the plan and it does take time to perfect.

I think that one of the biggest travesties being foisted off on all of us is the use of the phrase "the less fortunate".  Because it infers that those that have been unsuccessful are just not lucky... and so those that DO succeed only do so because of luck.  There are some people that have had actual bad luck... but they are dwarfed by those that have gotten exactly what they worked for... nothing.

Not very popular to say... but still needs saying.

Hun...

I can't help but wonder what <Malcolm Gladwell> would have to say about this post. In his latest book, Outliers, he discusses success and actually compares it to the enviroments and conditions in which we grow up in. --> Cough (Crap) ing :)

Shhh...Don't tell anyone I said that. I do not exist and I'm a dumb blonde :)

It's hard work, not just luck - but there's an exception to every rule:

I was on floortime and out of nowhere this couple walks in, pointing at a mobile home on our showing board in the foyer. I wrote a contract on it 30 minutes later! I'm not kidding and yes, this was pure luck!

Well howdy folks. I just got back in from showing houses. This working with buyers is really wearing me out!!!! . Today I forgot my supra key!!!! Luckily I only needed it for one house and we were able to get someone to come open it up for us.  Now I remember why I much prefer being on the seller side. Oh well.....got to do what you got to do. If I'm "lucky" I'll be writing a deal on a $550,000 house tomorrow.

Hey hun that's a pretty good comment. What happened? Is  the hair dye fading? YIKES!!!! I may pay for that one.

Andrea, That wasn't luck. You were working. I'm sure there are agents in your office that would have moaned and groaned about doing floor duty today and would have come up with a reason to NOT be there. You were and will get paid for it. Good job!!!

Really great comments folks! As always I really appreciate you stopping by and participating.

OK I'm heading over to read and comment on some of YOUR posts.

Well...

First of all I'll explain the cough crap. I was trying to portray a cough while I said crap :)

As for the dye...You suck my loved one. They're blonde streaks on mousy blonde hair. Duh :)

Hi BB!  You are SOOO right...luck has NOTHING to do with success--unless, of course, you're talking about the stock market in November/December 2008!!  (you NEVER know what you're getting into there--at least not right now!)  Congrats on that little gold star too!

I always think I am pretty lucky. Even when I have had not so good things happen I always take a moment to see what it is I am to learn because of it. This has been a tough year!

You've got the midas touch no matter how you got it. It's obvious from your writings you work hard and seem to be caring and honest. And what a great sense of humor. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us.

I think this is one of the gross misconceptions about blogging in particular and even about AR.  The results don't just happen.  It had taken my blog over a year to truly start bring in regular leads.  Hundreds of posts are not lucky, they are sweat equity.  Same is true on AR,  I can't even imagine how many posts you have written but I doubt many were written with the intent of getting featured.  You share your insight, your sense of humor and your expertise.  That is not luck, that is hard work and some innate talent.

Hardwork is needed along with some luck. I don't understand why i do alot of networking and have one of the best traveled websites with lots of hits and ooohs and awes, but it doesn't lead to commissions. So as time goes on I feel ladyluck is more important than only hardwork.

Aw damn...........I keep checking to be the 100th comment. I am sure that you will have a great prize (maybe an autographed photo of you and TLW in front of a battered pickup). But I am tired and the new eyeball assister is tired and I will just say that you have shared all the wisdom necessary. Sleep tight. Oh...the fish on the other post is a monster.

Look at you with another perty gold one to put into the pot :)

You are where you are because you know your schtuff.  That's what is selling right now, not BS!  Let the whiners whine while you are off to the bank.

Take care, give your lil lady a kiss for me :)

BB - Those who are successful have no time on their hands to wonder about somebody else's luck. But, those who are not so lucky have all the time in the world to wonder about the success or luck of others !

Yes,  you did get your point across, and it is so true.  My husband has a quote from Thomas Jefferson above his desk "it seems the harder I worker, the lucker I get" (Something close to those words)  But the same is true today.

I agree 110%
