I was invited by my SEO company (www.volacci.com) to be interviewed about blogging and social media a couple of days ago.  It was actually the second attempt, since we had relatively severe audio problems the first time around.

We are not professionals at this (yet), but I think it went really well.  I had some feedback from a few people already, and I would be anxious to hear what you think.

If you are a social media guru already, please understand that our target audience is those who are just getting started in this arena, along with some who still need to be convinced of the viability of social media marketing.  Since I have managed to amass a reasonable following over the past year and a half, I wanted to share some tips with newbies.

We billed this particular show as "Blogging and Social Media 101", so it covers a broad number of topics, but not with as much depth as we hope to incorporate in future episodes.

Blogging & Social Media 101 - Jason Crouch

I welcome your sincere input, even if it's negative.  I want to improve my skills in this area, so I promise not to get too angry.  ;)

Let me know what you think!

Thanks in advance for your input.

P.S. If you haven't used www.budurl.com yet, it's a very cool service that allows you to track URL traffic very easily.  I use it on Twitter a lot, since the limit is 140 characters.  Just a quick idea for you.

Julie - Thanks so much for listening.  Let me know what you think.  Apparently, you are alone in your desire to hear this at the moment.  :)

An hour? Jason, are you practicing to be a preacher? LOL! Our Pastor always jokes about his 3 closings. I sent him an e-mail last week, and pointed out to him that my "closing" was 3 paragraphs up from the last one. HAHAHAHA!

LISA - It's more conversational, really.  Just chatting about this stuff.  And yes, I am practicing to be a preacher... ;)

Hi Jason...I'm listening right now as I comment.  My first reaction is that I'm straining a bit to catch everything you say.  I just turned my volume up as high as it goes but sometimes your sentences trail off as your voice softens.

I know, I know, and you know, I'm an old lady so maybe it's just the ears.

Kate

P.S.  I like the idea I can comment while listening.  And yes, I'm part of your audience.

Jason - overall the whole podcast went rather well.  Only a couple of minor things that I think can be remedied pretty easily.

  1. Make sure your mic is close enough and angled in the right direction.  Your comments/discussion was difficult to hear.
  2. The acoustics were not the best.  A lot of hollow sound and a few patches of echos.
  3. A couple of spaces of dead air.

IMO these can all be taken care of very easily, and without expense.  Most of it is just a positioning thing.

But I really enjoyed listening to the show live.  It was over the top!

RITA - I hope you enjoy it.  Thanks!

REBECCA - Thanks so much.  Enjoy!

KATE - This was a night and day from our first attempt.  That one was impossible to hear.  We'll keep trying!

CAROL - This was actually done with a speaker phone, believe it or not.  We used snowball mics the first time, and the noise cancellation made it darn near impossible to understand.  With that in mind, there really isn't any positioning that could have worked better this time around.  However, we may experiment with some other ideas/microphones before we do another one, which will probably happen on December 17th.  Thanks for your input!

Jason... I clicked onto the link and it's still buffering audio...  but it's been 5 solid minutes.....  I will keep you posted.

On another note.. I did my first podcast with Brian Brady 1 1/2 years ago...  it was about 18 minutes long. Just my .02.. you should do them in parts of 15 to 20 minutes. Remember... many people can't even read a full blog of 900 words, let alone, sit through a podcast of 30 minutes or longer. Attention span..  not unless they are on the tredmill or working out or walking...  just my .02

PS... still buffering and it's been now 10 minutes..

Susie - Thanks for listening!  We are planning another one on December 17th to discuss the basics of Twitter and a few tools and tips, although I have a feeling you already know that stuff.  :)

Jeff - I appreciate the feedback.  This was really aimed at my friend's clients, who don't really "get it" yet with regard to social media, which is why it was longer.  However, I see your point.  I think the next one will likely be shorter.  Not sure what happened with the audio - you are the first person to have mentioned this issue.  Did you try refreshing the page?  (not that you should have to)

Jason, I spent my Sunday morning listening to you and Josh. You're a natural. You sounded relaxed and sincere. And, thanks for comparing a BLOG to a DIARY! You know that one made me smile...

Jason- I too had trouble hearing you and admit that I listened for about 3 minutes.  Jeff had some good input as to segmenting the program into parts.  Is that possible for you to do with the program you're using?  I would have liked to see a menu of discussion points and then I could click on the discussion that I was most interested in.  I'm sure this is something that will evolve rapidly for you and you did sound very relaxed and at ease.

Jason, after reading through your comments, I'll check with a DJ friend of mine and see what can be done to work on the background noise.  I thought the information was good, but it was hard to hear in a few places and that may loose you a listener or two.

BRUCE - I would love your input.

DEB - Thank you for listening!  I appreciate your kind compliment, my friend.  Glad to hear that you enjoyed the analogy.  I did a BlogTalkRadio show this morning with Ken Cook.  We are planning a 30-minute weekly show.  http://budurl.com/hwc2

MATT - I like the idea of trying to segment the show - not sure if we have that capability or not, but I will look into it. I think our audio problems will likely be fixed for next time.  Thanks for your input about how I sounded personally.

CAT - I would be interested to hear what your DJ friend has to say.  We will have different equipment and headsets for our next podcast, which is December 17th.
