Hey, I have this hilarious video of you dancing. Your face is so red. You should check it out.
If you've received a message like that through Facebook or MySpace, you may have been exposed to a virus known as "Koobface" and if you click on the link, it could destroy your computer's hard drive. The virus comes through an e-mail sent by one of your social networking site "friends" and once downloaded, will wipe out your system and emails, hoping to gather personal information.
The virus first surfaced in August but was making a reappearance this week. The virus, known as a worm, is being spread in the form of a message with a subject line such as "You look just awesome in this new movie".
When users click on the message it informs them their Flash player is out of date. They are then prompted to download or open the file flash_player.exe, a new Koobface variant which is a Trojan.
If the viewer approves the Flash installation, Koobface attempts to download a program called tinyproxy.exe. This loads a proxy server called Security Accounts Manager the next time the computer boots up. Koobface then listens to traffic on TCP port 9090 and proxies all outgoing HTTP traffic. For example, a search performed on Google, Yahoo!, MSN, or Live.com may be hijacked to other, lesser-known search sites.
Facebook has posted instructions on how to remove the infection. Facebook representatives said they are also updating security systems and asking those with corrupted accounts to reset their passwords.
