That's right.  I have a sailboat on my desk.  Well, actually it's a picture that I use as the desktop of my computer.  Here she is...

Sailing towards my goals

It's not mine.  That certainly isn't me in the cockpit right there.  There is only one reason I keep this picture of complete strangers on my desktop, staring at me throughout the day:  Motivation!

This is not a sailboat that I want to buy.  This picture, to me, represents the pinnacle of my career; when I'm able to just buy whatever I want to buy and do whatever I want to do.

My father-in-law owns a boat on Maryland's Eastern Shore and I visit often for leisurely sails.  When I'm there I see many other men and women who have succeeded at their chosen occupation and retired blissfully to enjoy the rest of their days on the water.  This is my goal.

Every call I make, appointment I attend, referral partner I meet, client I advise, application I take, and every loan I close is one more step towards this sailboat.  If you just go through the motions of this occupation you could spin your wheels forever.  If you keep a goal in front of you at all times, you'll find your day becomes more structured.

Yeah, not so bad.  I'd actually want one bigger than that but we'll see what I can actually handle when the time comes.

I've found after helping my father-in-law with a charter on the Chesepeak: I make a much better deck hand than a captain!

I tried sailoring once.  It seemed like a great idea at the time.  I learned it is very hard and takes a long time to get anywhere.

Now that looks relaxing! Nice photo!!

Kevin, that's a great picture :) I believe that everyone is sane with that.

good one !

That's a great thing to have on your desk -- motivation and hope for the future! Love it!

Jason: It's certainly only a hobby that patient people can enjoy. There are times when you could hop in the water and swim faster than you are going. That's why they usually come with motors :-) Jacque: Thanks! I guess it helps to have a relaxing picture in front of you during the day. Never thought about that. Ray and Sarah: Thanks for your comments!

Now THAT is inspiration to work every single day! I know two other people that do something similar. One has a car photo the other has a photo of Mark Messier, lol. I think he wants to meet him, not stalk him.

My husband created a web page with all the "things" he wants and the places he wants to go. It is great inspiration and motivation. I like the idea of it being on your desktop to see all the time. What a great photo.

Chris and Ashley:  I'd love to take credit for the idea but it's actually an old theory.  I think I may have gotten it from "Think and Grow Rich".  I also read Harvey McKay books and I remember he put the name of a big account he wanted to get in the inside brim of his hat.

I've been doing this since my first desk job when I had a picture of an electric bass guitar cut out from a catalog hanging in my cube.  I got that guitar and now I'm on to bigger things.

My goal is to have Kevin tear through market and make a bizzion dollars, buy his boat, add me to his will and have an unfortunate boating accident..... but all is not doom and gloom, as I take the helm and live out the life he would have wanted.

Not bad, eh?

Rob-you're morbid.  Why don't you get your own dream.

Kevin-not a bad picture.

04/24/2007 09:25 AM by Ann Guy (NA)

Rob:  You forgot to put "accident" in quotation marks, as you sail away with the life preserver in-hand laughing in a maniacal way.

Thanks Ann.

Sing along......

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHc3sOXkjOw

Everytime that I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face gettin clearer
The past is gone
It went by like dust to dawn
Isnt that the way
Everybodys got their dues in life to pay

I know what nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know its everybodys sin
You got to lose to know how to win

Half my life is in books written pages
Live and learn from fools and from sages
You know its true
All the things come back to you

Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter, sing for the tears
Sing with me, if its just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good lord will take you away
(x2)

Dream on, dream on
Dream yourself a dream come true
Dream on, dream on
Dream until your dream come true
Dream on, dream on, dream on...

Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tears
Sing with me, if its just for today
Maybe tomorrow the good lord will take you away

I love your sailboat.  One of the best memories I have is a 10 day stint sailing on The Chesapeake.  We were planning to go to the Gulf Coast and Hurricane George hit.  We changed our plans in 1 day and headed east.  What wonderful memories!

Rob:  Thanks!  I never knew the lyrics to that song.  I didn't realize it was so poetic.  I like the line "you got to lose to know how to win"

Lea:  Chesapeake sailing is great.  I've never been out for that long.  The longest I've been out is the 4-5 days during Memorial Day weekend when we sail up and anchor in Baltimore Inner Harbor.  There's usually 10-20 boats tied up together.  It's something to see!

If you get the urge to come down I can refer you to my father-in-law for a charter cruise.  That invitation is open for any Rainers!

"If you get the urge to come down I can refer you to my father-in-law for a charter cruise.  That invitation is open for any Rainers!"

Does he have a website?  What type of charter (time/where/costs).

Oh and ....

"you got to lose to know how to win"

.....is just classic in describing the realities of life.

He is working on a new website that will be up in a couple weeks.  Here is his current site:

 http://www.randrchartersandsailschool.net

Rates are on the website.  He's located on Kent Island on the Eastern Bay just over the Bay Bridge from Annapolis.  Beautiful area.

That quote reminds me of my favorite.  I'm not sure who it's from, I found it in an old book of my dad's and ripped it out.

"Success is the final rung on a ladder of failures."

Kevin-Do we get the A/R Kevin told me to come discount? Just kiddin' , sort of **SVW** as TLW would say

04/27/2007 04:24 PM by Ann Guy (NA)

Ann:  I'd be careful.  He may charge you extra!

I haven't talked to him about it but I'm sure I could work something out.

If you choose to go, I definately want to be there too.  I have to be there to see Rob R. trying to catch up to us in a rowboat as he's folding business cards into paper airplanes and trying to get them to land on the deck, all the while screaming, "Call me, Ann!"

Just having fun Rob.  :-)

Have a great weekend everyone!
