150,000 Attend Our Christmas Celebration

By
Industry Observer with Retired

San Diego opened its doors at Balboa Park and hosted an absolutely fabulous Christmas Party and Celebration. I arrived at 4:30 PM transported by city sponsored transportation. We were instructed to park at any of the satellite parking locations and were picked and chauffeured over to the entrance to Balboa Park And they were not just any old transpiration buses. They were polished, beautiful inside with even video screens throughout playing a Christmas Movie. I was needless say really impressed with the wonderful way the city organized this. That was my first impression and the city was batting 100% so far.1st Class transportation provides to everyone Dec 2008

When I got to the park, I was impressed with how beautifully it was dressed up for the holidays. The celebration was so outstanding it is going to take several blog posts to get it all in here.

I have so much enthusiastic praise for the city and the marvelous Christmas Celebration, I am almost at a loss for words as I begin to describe and then visually supplement what all they have planned for a true city wide celebration. I took over 300 photos and numerous videos so that I could share this amazing and huge event that encompassed the entire park, all the museums, vendors, productions and the presentations that were all 1st class.

You have all read some of San Diego posts and how I feel about this amazing city and what it provides the  fortunate citizens that live here and even our tourist visitors. I will be bringing forward a couple more posts about this wonderful Holiday party where everyone is invited. The Christmas Nights , A Christmas Celebration in the Park, runs for two nights, last night and tonight. They expect and are planning on even more people tonight and attendance for the two day will exceed 300,000.

I was so delightfully pleased with every detail and the work that went into planning this grand event. The entertainment was totally wonderful, the atmosphere was amazing and the museums -well all I can say is that for those of us that live here, we are really blessed with world class culture.

This grand park is home to so many museums and they were all open to the public and and totally free to the guests ( everyone who lives in or is visiting San Diego was invited. ) What an opportunity. I was also surprised that they welcomes me to take pictures in public area of the museum . So I took about 100 or so and will share a couple of fun pieces that conveys the character of these outstanding museums.

These pictures were in the Grand Hall of the Natural History museum but I have so many more photos I am planning on doing the Museums by night and show how wonderful they are.

So I wanted to show some of the really festive lighting and the the many areas filled will Holiday Magic. Here is a small sample of some of the festive lighting on the buildings and all through the park.

Hi Susie, I surely wish you had been here and I would guess your camera and your skill would have come in mighty handy, besides we had as part of San Diego's Cultural Diversity, various countries were represented  with food exhibits (booths to sample their cusine) and the cusine was truely international. The lines at all the venues were very long and I suffered through without eating though I did have some hot spiced cider.

Hi Missy, With two nights of festivities, it is estimated that in excess of 300,000 attended. I would call that a pretty good sized party. And it was wonderful! From beginning to end. The planning must have been amazing and the city did an extraordinary job of putting on the party.

Hi Gary, It is a real treasure and the museums there are extraodinary. The Zoo is also part of the park.

William,
Sounds like a marvelous event that was well organized and provided very special entertainment for those who attended.  You are very fortunate to have access to world class culture (as you said).

Hi Fred, Many thanks for your nice comments. I have never been featured in Localsm. The only ones I ever see here in San Diego are resturant review. Since I don't plan to do those, I don't think there is much a possibility that will happen, But thanks for thinking it worthy.

Hi Teri, that would have been fun and as I mentioned to Susie about the cuisine being international. Tent after tent from each country was set up in International Village and the lines were simply amazing to try their specialties. I saw  Iran, Hungary, Peru,  Spain, italy, Denmark, France, Scotland, Ireland, Poland, Germany and a few others that I just can't remember. Anyway, with all of them cooking and serving food it was certainly fascinating to see all the different kinds of food.

Hi Sharon, I know that to move over 150,000 per night was incredible and the cleanliness and sophistication of the buses that were used was impressive. I watched a movie on the way back to where I was parked and  the interior was nicer than many planes I have flown on.

Hi Cynthia, The musical presentation and orchestra was 1st class. There was a choral group that seem to be proving the background for others but there were choirs and children's group, the San Diego Men's Chorus ,The Sweet Adeline's and we even had a finalist of American Idol. There was  other stages stages set up through out the park beside the ginormous one at the Organ Pavilion. I could have done 10 post on the event. I saw and did so much in that 7 hours and felt like I never really stopped.

You know what is funny, I saw nothing about all this in todays paper. There was a picture yesterday on the front page with a small blurb. If I were a newspaper editor, I could have filled 10 pages with article after article and photos throughout. To me, it was an opportunity missed.

Woo Hoo, There were so many lights and brilliant trees Sally, throughout the whole park and my camera was acting up and didn't like taking pictures at night. I salvaged a couple hundred but others just didn't come out. I guess I  should do that MeMe tonight and ask for a new camera, A Nikon with Telephoto and Wide angle lens, lol. I sure do hope I get one soon, this little camera is great for fast on the go but for important things, it always seems to fails me. Or I fail it because I don't know how to get the settings right in time or maybe a combination of the two, lol.

It was so wonderful and all those crowds of people were so interesting to watch. None of my videos of the performances and the huge tree that opens up came out because standing in a throng of people that were all talking close to me, well, what I hadn't thought of is that their voices over the music sounds horrible. I could use the videos if I could remove the sound and then maybe add music. Does Gary know if elements will do that? At about 500 yards back from it , when the tree opened and the live Nativity appeared, I couldn't make it out very well. And the Flip could not get a focus clear at all that far back.

It was still great and it was a fun way top spend the 7 hours seeing and doing things that were very special.

William - what a wonderful post about the festivities. I was not able to make it downtown so this was the next best thing. You did a great job chronicling all the activities and the photos are greata. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

Thanks Jeff, I really enjoyed this and it was so well done this year. I have attended in past years  but this one was marvelous and I was fortunate to go early as I was able to get to most of the museums again before they clsoed at 9:00.
