california tree lighting ceremonyCalifornia's annual 77th State Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, themed "We Celebrate," is scheduled for Tuesday, December 9th at 4:30 PM. The ceremony begins on the West steps of the State Capitol building, with the official lighting of the tree at 5:15.

In partnership with CaliforniaVolunteers, Gov. Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver are asking for food contributions to support WE Can Holiday Food Drive. You can bring your food donations to the West steps of the Capitol; after the celebration, donations can be dropped off at the North entrance to the Capitol.

We've got entertainment at the ceremony, too. Rick Springfield will perform, among other musical guests such as Sheryl Lee Ralph and the Varsity Club, including the Unity Community Choir and Galena Street East.

In case you're wondering about whether California, in the midst of the worst financial crisis in history, can afford to illuminate the tree, know that its 6,500 low-wattage LED lights will save the state 95% of the energy that would ordinarily be consumed by using incandescent. Besides, the lights are powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, which is donated by Altergy Systems, and the hydrogen for the cell is donated by Air Products.

See, this is one of the great reasons to live in Sacramento, the capital of California. We have all the fun next Tuesday: The Governor and First Lady, celebrities, music and the official state Christmas tree. Eat your hearts out, Los Angeles.

Well Elizabeth:  It sounds like you and the folks in Sacramento have the situation there very much under control.  All those way-cool energy-saving items sound just awesome.  Just think what would happen if all of Sacramento did that, or all of California.  Heck... how bout if our entire country conserved it's energy... just like that !  Thanks for sharing.

Even in this tough time a silver lining maybe we will all learn how to conserve more because of a need to do so which is a stronger force than just wanting to conserve.

Elizabeth

What a great time to be had. Hydrogen fuel cells for the Christmas tree? That's a great idea because the by product can self water the Christmas tree. Tell the Governor if he misses Wisconsin where he went to College I could send him a Wisconsin tree and perhaps some Cheese.

More importantly my charming and wonderful friend I hope you have a wonderful Holiday.

Sincerely

Tom Braatz

Elizabeth, I've noticed that many of the HUGE  trees being erected are using low voltage, energy efficient lighting. That's great....;-)
