For some reason I always that that Texans wore cowboy hats and cowboy boots?  Well I hate to break it to ya 'all.......but they don't!

Unless Austin is an anomaly-  Frankly I can't say th at I saw a single cowboy - drat......lol.....And although they say that Austin is seriously ' weird.' and that they like to keep it that way.........

So for those that missed Blog Entry: Some Think its Wacky and Weird - Where am I? - Update - I'm in Austin, Texas this is a semi-sequel!

I didn't see anything weird........ok....well maybe the Bat Bridge.......so does that mean that I'm so weird I don't see the weird?

Well between classes I tried to squeeze in as much seeing of the sights as I could.........unfortunately that wasn't too much this time around!  Thursday night we went to the infamous Sixth Street..........where practically every other doorway opened into a bar with a live band.  Did you know that Texas has the highest number of bars per capita in the whole U.S. of A?

                                               Texas flag

These animations getttin' you all worked up aren't they? ;-)-

Well  FIRST  of all we went to the Iron Cactus - for some fab Mexican food........and for the first time ever I had a water make guacamole from scratch right from our table........you know ......how they used to do with Caesar salad? Yum.........

After that we went to the world famous Dueling Pete's for a piano 'men' extravaganza......and a fun sing-a-long...these guys were unbelievable........and what they wouldn't play........for a buck (or 20)!  :-)

So this was early...before it got really wild and crazy........

And finishing the night with a touch of class we went to the Driscoll Hotel...built in 1886 as a showcase for a Cattle Baron.......this home is listed as a heritage site......and is truly breathtaking...We went to watch the Christmas tree Lighting - well we actually missed it.........but we did see the tree lit up! lol  I'm a sucker for anything Victorian......so I fell in love - and THIS is where I want to stay next time!

For the Romantic at heart..........there was the horse and buggy tour of downtown Austin

Hmmm I'm thinking my camera doesn't take such good night time shots......we'll have to work on that!

At last but not least.......I had the opportunity of meeting up with Active Rain's Icon.....Jason Crouch!  Although the it wasn't for nearly long enough.......it was long enough for each of us to take our 'token' blog photo of us........say how we would have recognized each other anywhere.......and promise to meet up next month!   So...........that ............was my very first Active Rain in person Meet up........and what a way to start............eh? :-)

Yep I know, I haven't told you why I was here yet.........but its comin' - in the next post! :-)

Hi Liz...That's right, I'm waiting to find out what the mystery is all about.

Lucky you, meeting Jason.  Of course I'll have to tell Jason the same thing about meeting you.

Kate

P.S.  I lived in Texas for two years and never wore boots or a cowboy hat while there.  Maybe I should have.  I might have had more fun.

Austin is a strong and vibrant city, and one place I surely want to visit again.  Did you take the carriage ride?  The gal that was our driver-hostess was exceptional with the history lesson she gave to us.  Very entertaining!

Edit:  I forgot to tell you, Petes was the only place every evening that had a line outside the door (when I was there)  I snapped pictures of it to send to my son as he does the dueling pianos gig here in Ypsilanti MI at Pub 13.   So much fun!

Kris - no I didn't do the carriage ride!  Something about riding a carriage on my own seemed kind of lonesome, but then I didn't know about the historic narrative!  I shall go next time!  And your son does the dueling piano's too?  Gosh you have a talented family! :-)

I hope you know that the Driscoll Hotel is one of those haunted places. I stayed there many years ago. One of the things I like about the Gaslamp Quarter here in San Diego is that it is so much like Sixth Street in Austin.

If we could find some time during the day for coffee that would be great. Shoot me an email when you know your schedule between the 11-15th with several times you might be available and see if we can match up.
