National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, 2008

Stars and Stripes

I visited Hawaii in 2005 and had the honor of visiting Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona.  Here is a collection of photos I took that day.

Pearl Harbor

USS Arizona

The memorial was built in 1961 as a tribute to all the men and women who lost their lives on that historic day. The memorial is 184-feet long and carefully crosses over the Arizona's mid-section. Openings along the both sides of the memorial afford a dramatic view of the ship resting on the floor of the harbor. A marble-walled chapel at the far end of the memorial lists the names off all the sailors entombed here.

When visiting Pearl Harbor it is a must to visit the USS Arizona Memorial.  Built in 1961, it is a tribute to all the men and women who lost their lives on taht day in history.  The memorial itself is 184 feet long and crosses over the mid-section of the Arizona.  Openings on both sides allow for a dramatic view of the ship resting on the floor of the harbor.  A chapel at the far end with a marble wall with the engraved list of names of all the sailors entombed here. There is also a list of survivors who have had their remains interred with their shipmates.

Bob,

Pearl Harbor needs to be remembered, and this is the anniversary of that attack. Thanks for the very well done tribute. :)

Steve - I'm glad you liked my tribute to Pearl Harbor.  Thanks for commenting.

Kenneth - For some reason Photobucket doesn't always load the slide show.  Not sure what that's all about.  It might be time for me to look for another photo sharing site.  Thank you for commenting.

Valerie - Thank you for the compliments and for commenting.  Pearl Harbor like 9-11 is hard to forget.

Cristol - Yes, it is very amazing and surreal.  It demands quiet and respect.  I found myself talking in whispers and hushed tones.

Hawaii is one of seven states that I have not been to. I cannot convince myself to fly for such a long time over water because I like to look out the windows and watch the ground go by. Maybe I just need to take a Stephen King novel with me, or maybe a cruise to Hawaii. Hmmmm.

Russel - Thank you for your comments.  Hawaii is well worth the long flight or even a cruise.  "The Stand" would be my choice to help pass the time.  Been a while since I did a re-read on that one.
