When she was eight years old, Hannah Kristan of New Haven Connecticut had a vision.  Born with Spina Bifida and confined to a wheelchair since she was two years old, Hannah was unable to play at the local playground or at school recess due to the lack of handicapped-accessible equiprment.  

Hannah wanted to play just as much as everyone else her age and did not let her limitations stop her from starting a campaign to finance a handicap accessible playground where all children could play together by selling homemade jewelry and baked goods. Through Hannah's persistence and the generousity of the community Hannah's Dream Playground opened on September 8, 2000 at East Shore Park on Woodward Avenue.  

This 300,000 square foot facility called a "boundless playground" is the second largest of its kind in the United States. The design of the playground is fully integrated so that children of all ages and abilities can play.   East Shore Park is open everyday from dusk to dawn and also includes a tennis court and several playing fields.

Liz - It took a little over 4 years for Hannah's Dream Playground to be completed and is such a wonderful acoomplishment and example we can all learn from and follow.  As for the disclsoure, I'm following my coach's successful recommendations! :-)

Donna, That really makes me wish they would do that everywhere. How sad that many children can only watch. Kudos to New Haven for making a wonderful playground for all to enjoy.

Carole - The Boundless Playgrounds Organization is devoted to developing these types of playgrounds across the country and currently have 100 built in over 20 states.
