Davis Islands was built by D. P. Davis in the 1920's. He conceived the idea of creating three island at the mouth of Hillsborough River, just adjacent to downtown Tampa. He did not get to see his idea become a reality as he mysteriously disappeared on a cruise crossing the Atlantic during the great depression when banks were foreclosing on his loans. The canal seperating the third island was eventually filled in and became the Peter O. Knight Airport.
