Since it was designed in 1959 by Las Vegan Betty Willis and constructed by the Yesco Sign Company, The 'Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas' sign has become an international icon for the valley. It's a favorite spot to take a picture, for newlyweds, and those just visiting. There are countless thousands of pictures that have been taken at this symbol of Las Vegas.
The problem is trying to reach the sign, since it's in the median of Las Vegas Blvd. To get to it, you either had to park illegally on the median or in one of the travel lanes. The other choice for pedestrians, was to make the mad dash across lanes of traffic, and back again. In the interest of safety the Clark County Commissioners approved a 12 space parking lot. Las Vegas is considered one of the most accessible cities, and this lot will add to that, making the Las Vegas sign accessible by the disabled for the first time.
In November construction began in the median to the south of the sign. It provides 12 spaces for cars, 2 of them are for handicap parking. There are also 2 bus parking spots provided, and it hasn't been unusual for them to stop in the past. Around the new lot, a green decorative wrought iron fence will also help to keep sign visitors from stepping into traffic. The new lot can ONLY be accessed from Southbound Las Vegas Blvd., and exits in the same direction.
The ribbon cutting to open the new lot is set for Monday, December 8, 2008, at 10 AM. Commissioners are to be on hand, and it should be crowded. They're already issuing a heads-up to those wishing to attend, advising them to car pool. I know a lot of people are looking forward to having this safer access, so just wanted to do this quick post to pass it along.
