Friday Night LightsIt's a first in the 70 year history for Independence's Simon Kenton High School. They are playing in the 2008 State 6A Championship football game. The FIRST time a number 4 seed from Northern Kentucky has made it to the final championship game. For many years now the 6A championship teams have been limited to the Louisville power houses, Trinty High School and Louisville Male High School.

The entire town is beaming with pride. Even Kenton county (a county with 6 high schools with football teams) has put its support behind the Simon Kenton Pioneers in their shot at the state title.

Northern Kentucky has had several state championships from Kenton County's Beechwood High School in class 1A division and Campbell counties Highlands High School seems to always been a contender in the 3A Division. Northern Kentucky is a GREAT football and high school sports area.

Simon Kenton's previous sports claim to fame was a state championship basketball team in 1981. That same year an explosion at the school killied one student, injuried many and closed the school for almost a full year.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: at Louisville's Cardinal Stadium Saturday December 13, 2008 at 7:00PM
