GUERILLA CHRISTMAS TREES ALONG AUSTIN HIGHWAYS

trees

Along Hwy 360 (just past Spicewood Springs Road), down Red Bud Trail near Tom Miller Dam and probably other locations in Austin, enjoy watching anonymous people decorate ordinary cedar trees growing wild by the road.  Some trees are carefully adorned with tinsel, garland & ornaments.  Others are decorated less than perfectly.  These people are made up of families some with small children, couples and groups of friends.  All of them are taking time to dress these less than desired cedar trees for the rest of us to add a chuckle of joy as we pass by to see their masterpieces.  It's the idea of someone taking the time for others to enjoy  with no thought of compensation, reward or even a donation box!

This is so Austin!  Even with the chaotic lives we lead, people's worry about the economy, layoffs and 401K's dropping in value, it's amazing what we learn from random acts of kindness.  Maybe viewing the transformation of the unappreciated cedar tree we will carry it a step further and do something nice without recognition for someone we know or someone in need; something that will benefit others.

Take a moment and drive by our lowly cedars festooned for Christmas by caring souls for your viewing pleasure.  They are amazing!!

Happy Holidays and enjoy some unselfish giving this Christmas!

I noticed this year that there were lights on the trees on Spicewood Springs at 360. Is this a new tradition?

If only those people would PICK UP THE TRASH THEY LEAVE, then maybe I would feel better about it. But every year, every single year, the decorations are left on the trees and become LITTER, trashing the highway and neighborhoods, not to mention it's a a huge waste of money people could've spent on charitable causes like giving ornaments or trees to those less fortunate. I have been here 30 years and have never seen it as bad as this year. Sorry, but it's GROSS and TRASHY, and is an environmental hazard for birds and wildlife. Do these people not care about the greenbelts and watersheds they pollute? Obviously they are not true Austinites if they are okay with trashing our gorgeous city..

I am completely with NATIVE^^. It's a neat idea, but it becomes litter. For the past three years, I have gone out on the second weekend after Christmas and have filled at least 2 dozen lawn and leaf bags with the leavings of this "tradition." If you are going to do it, clean it up.
