Olney Ale House - Disappointing

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc.

After an hour's drive to Olney Ale House in Montgomery County to meet family for lunch yesterday, we soon regretted our choice of meeting place.

My husband and I had been looking forward to visiting with our daughter, in town from Texas for just two days, as we enjoyed drinks and appetizers pending the arrival of three others in our family.  In spite of the fact that the restaurant was nearly empty, the manager instructed a hostess not to seat us until everyone else arrived.  We explained that we wanted to order right away, but she was adamant that we must wait in the cold and drafty entryway until the entire party was present.

Apparently she never learned that "You don't get a second chance to make a good first impression."

I had expected to write a glowing restaurant review in my Maryland Real Estate Blog about lunch in this (formerly) friendly restaurant, with its cozy decor and excellent food.  Unfortunately, that first impression was so unpleasant, there was no chance we would leave with a positive feeling about Olney Ale House.

It's hard for me to experience something like this without thinking of the opportunities I have to create a good first impression on potential customers - or not.  For example, the first phone conversation with a prospect, the homepage of my website and blog, our first meeting in person, or even the welcome by a duty agent who greets my customers and clients when they arrive at my office, similar to the manager greeting us when we arrived at the restaurant.

All the good food, good ale, good decor, and good business practices of Olney Ale House over several decades went down the tubes for us as a result of our first impression yesterday.  If nothing else, I hope I learned (or remembered) something from this experience that will help me avoid making a similar mistake in real estate.  I'd like any review of my business to read "Margaret Woda - Fabulous!"

Margaret- Rest assured, this is a lesson for all to learn and heed. We must make that first impression count when it is us the consumer is looking at, and when we meet others, we must NOT allow our first impression to overshadow what trial that person may be having that day. We never know what troubles someone. I love how Nestor treats clerks in the stores etc, always, says to them, OH dear, you must be having a bad day because I know you are wonderful inside. Then they spill the beans. :)

Katerina, what a gem you are married to.  I'm sure you're right.  In this case, the manager was simply inflexible about enforcing a restaurant policy that she did not create.  That was not so much the problem as her attitude when doing so.

Service? Customer Service? Quick, take a picture or make a note in a diary. I swear it will soon be something only found in history books!

My hospitality training taught me well, and something I will not forget....it's all about service and follow up! If we want our clients back, or for them to be clients for life, we have to treat them right!

One bad experience gets more mileage than 10 good ones! Let's at least hope the spent with family overshadowed the less than stellar service!

I realize people have good days and bad, but if you're in the service industry, as we are, you really have to put the troubles of the day away and focus on making the person in front of you feel as though you appreciate their business.  Looks like some folks at Olney Ale House forgot that little lesson.

Margaret,
That one/first chance to make a good impression is so important.  It's true people tell others about their bad experiences more often than about the good ones.

Your right about 1st impressions Margaret especially with a restaurant. Most people do not give restaurants a 2nd chance.

Margaret,

A blast from my past! I haven't been to the Olney Ale House in over 15 years.  Used to frequent that place a lot, when I lived in "the outer Silver Spring area" near Burtonsville.  It was always crowded and service was just OK.  The food (especailly the beef stew) always made up for it.  I am surprised to hear they are still in business - I thought they were long gone.  Do they still occupy that old house on Route 108 or near the junction of 108 and some other road?

Sorry to hear about your experience.  Like everyone else is saying we can all take a lesson from this post.  Just think what a boost for their business this post could have been for them if thay had made a better impression!

Debbie - Yes, same location they had when I went there in the 60's.  You should treat yourself to a show at the "new" expanded Olney Theater, and stop by the Ale House.  The food and service were great, even if the first impression wasn't.

Bill - So true!

Cynthia - You're right.  I went on at least 10 websites that have restaurant reviews to give the place one star...

Jesse - I couldn't help thinking that the investors who own that business would probably have made a different decision than the manager did that day.

Thom - Customer service is a disappearing occurence, isn't it.

Thesa - I'd love to hear from you!  If you miss me, I'll call back.
