I wrote this post.

This post was written by me.

Every once in a while, the passive voice creeps into one of my posts.  I usually catch it and do a little editing before posting.

To those of you who were not taught English grammar by nuns (OK, that's the passive voice), there are two ways to structure a sentence.

When you write in the active voice, the subject acts, as in "Nuns taught me English."

When using the passive voice, they do it to you, "I was taught English by nuns."

If you want to obfuscate, the passive voice is your friend.  The passive voice is used a lot by government employees when they are writing stuff like tax regulations, or rules governing the maximum permissible filth level in peanut butter (passive voice).  Or, government employees use the passive voice to make federal regulations indecipherable (active voice).

Either way, these writers don't want you to get whatever it is they are writing!

Active voice, powerful.  Passive voice, mushy.  And thank you Sister Mary Letitia for teaching me the difference!

Oh gosh that is my problem and I too was taught by nuns from 1st-8th grades.  I am sure I write in the passive on my posts all the time.

Now that was enlightening. BTW, I thought government regs were always active (i.e. doing something to you)! Wait, it is the writing that is passive...duh....

Hi Patricia - Yep - Holy Names High, Montreal Canada for me.  But I think I missed the active/passive lesson, however did like the double negative one.  Whatever they did to for you, worked....your writing is very, very good!

There's a difference between doing something & letting it happen to you!  Good, thoughtful post!

The more blog posts I do the more I notice how poorly I write. Look at my last sentence. See what I mean?

I do not think I was ever privy to this grammar lesson.  I LOVE it!  (Which sounds much better than saying, "It is loved by me").

Very Interesting! I'm married to an English teacher. I don't think she ever mentioned to me about an active or passive voice. I think I will actively seek her counseling. This is good information. Thanks.

Hmmm, I would say that I write to much in the passive voice then, or is it truly just all about me?

You sound like an editor! (so says the ex-Magazine Editor!).

I just lectured my 16-year-old on this same topic.

Patricia,

Oh my, I hope that reading MY post did not inspire you to write this.  :)

It is funny because I was behing in replying to my comments so I decided to just flip over hear and read your latest and I ended up with a a very humorous English lesson!

No Nuns in my past, just good ole Southern teachers, and to be honest I have not exercised the pen in most of my lifetime.

You have indeed inspired me to study a bit more on this active passive thing. And also to subscribe to your blog for future learning material!

Patricia...I think I write in both voices, depending on the subject matter and "how gentle" I want to come across in my blogs.  I am always told that I tend to be a tad blunt in expressing my opinion, so I try to tone myself down a bit with my passive writing voice.  I was in AP / GATE English all through high school...and while I cannot for the life of me remember my teacher's name, I can completely envision her up in front of the class with all her crazy antics to drive her points home!  LOL  Great post...and congrats on the shiny star :-)

Pat - Great title for this post - you are a great writer whether it is active or passive. I think you were born with your interesting and creative mind.

Patricia - I don't think you could be passive (voice, or otherwise) if you tried!

One of Russel Ray Home Inspector's very first blogs was about people who write in the third person. For an industry that relies so greatly on personal interaction, to keep on reading that "Russel Ray was born in Kingsville, and Russel Ray graduated from Texas A&M, and Russel Ray has been..." got really tedious. There's a reason that personal pronouns exist, but for some reason people don't like to use really short words like "I" and "me."

Another one that frustrates me is "myself" as in "Myself and John went to the store" or "If you need one of these, come see myself." I have even heard Bush, Obama, Powell, and others of the most educated people in the world (Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc.) do that.
