Beebe store sold

We do a lot of griping about photos of our MLS listings and solds.  Today I sat up straight when I saw this one particular photo come through as sold for $84,000.  There is no identification as to what old department store it may have been but the picture is loud and clear.  I loved the stark clarity of it.

Beebe downtown

Doing a little investigating, I found this old photo of downtown Beebe Arkansas, a growing city that is about 20 miles from my town of Searcy.  Once while in Beebe not too far back, I went into what I think was this store, still open and operating as a department store.  Later, I think it had become a flea market and I went in again.  It seemed so small at the time.  The ceilings were very low and it felt cramped.

So I'm going to see if some of my Searcy friends know what store in Beebe this was.  I believe it is on this street and it is definitely a corner position.

Hopefully, your chosen agent in

Barbara, I am 99% sure it is this one:

Charles, I would say you are right, BUT... the CENTER window (lower range of windows) doesn't look right... and unless the streets have changed... it's doesn't have a street to the immediate left (it's not on the corner).

I know what you mean Alan----I am just counting on their being as many changes as years between photos:)

Charles, that does look like Raven.  He was getting old so my cat may have been a Dr. Kevorkian. I'm like Alan, I don't think that one in on the proper corner.  I'm thinking the one on the next corner.  You should see Beebe.  You could film a great Peyton Place or some such because most of the streets are as they were.  Where are my Searcy experts when I need them???

Alan, I just put up another Beebe one.  How do you like those cars?

Love both pictures but I haven't a clue as to what building it is.  I didn't hang out in Beebe much growing up, my gang gravitated toward Judsonia, Bald Knob, Newport.....

You sure hit the jackpot on all those animal blogs, Barbara.  We currently have "something" alive living in the shower wall of our master bathroom.  "it" lived there last year, too.  we've had 2 exterminators out here, they can't find where it is getting in.  I'm going to put a trap under the house, near the bathroom pipes and see what it catches.  Also will put out poison.   Any other ideas?

Anita, more details! How do you know something is alive in your wall?  Give us the full monty!  Squeaks, howls, smells?  You may have some smells if you poison it!

My husband saw another skunk walking around the house today so we have to borrow the trap again. This time he may be more beautiful with white stripes!!

But Charles, I think it's on the other side of the street.  Here's another Beebe.  I'm using up all my good old photos in one blog.Beebe downtown

Charles, I've called in an expert if she'll show up.  I guess I could drive down there.  But wasn't the MLS picture neat?  Hey, and wasn't that Raven/Cat blog fun??

They are cool pics, and Raven and Nutsy are always fun----except for your delusion that Raven somehow became cat food:)

1:48pm • #13

No squeaks or howls, just the scratching of little finger/toe nails.....I could imitate the sound the next time I see you.  I realize we'll taking a chance with poison, but I'm thinking "desperate times call for desperate measures"......What NO ONE can figure out, is HOW is it getting in there?  and what is it doing once it does get there?   Wouldn't you think it would be just getting out of the cold and would be wanting a good night's sleep?  I hear that scratching all night long!  When I'm awake, that is.

Beebe is not by bag.

Anita, my guess is rats. One easy way they get in is through roof vents. I learned to put screens on the vents while living in California. Roof rats were very common. They go down and make nests between the 2X4s in walls. I think squirrels can do that also.

This is from my friend Patsy Pipkin, who lived many years in Beebe AR and is a well-known author of at least 3 books.

The building is definitely the R.V. Powell Building in Beebe. Mr. Powell sold just about everything and he had one of the first (if not the very first)  television sets in Beebe. He put it in the window of the store and people gathered on the sidewalk to watch. Bill saw a baseball game there, and says it might have been the first time he saw television.

Mr. Powell's daughter, Betty Hayes, died a few years ago and her husband, Lee Hayes, still lives in Beebe. Bill also said that there was a livery stable behind the store when he was a youngster. He played there. There was also an outside stairs on the side of the building (when I moved to Beebe in 1947) where you could go to the second floor without going in the front door.

Bill's dad told about two wells on the main street, one in the intersection between Powell's and Staggs/Huffaker (on the corner beside Powell's Store) and the other well where the stop light is now,  just before the railroad tracks. People who came to town in wagons pulled by mules or horses watered them at the wells.   Bill is much, much older than me -  I think I'll write his history some day.

Thanks, Patsy!

Anita, Don's theory sounds good.  I'll bet you have mice or rats.  Perhaps Nutsy can come check it out for you.  Course if they were squirrels he'd just let'em go.  We have another trap out tonight for the skunk.

Mrs Barbara,

Mr Charles is trying to circumvent the democratic process. Fortunately, the overwhelming support that I have from the little people, such as yourself (and the very little people such as Mr James and Mr Charles) has brought to my campaign some heavy hitters. I really appreciate this gentleman's support and I am glad to be part of his team.

Nutsy if you had something in that head of yours besides a lot of hot air you would know that (in spite of your incredulous sleuthing skills) that if you really look close at the evidence, taste the evidence, smell the evidence you will find that I had nothing to do with defacing your sign.  You may have to give some serious thought as to your conclusion that Raven is not alive-----oh, I forgot----you have nothing to think with.

Folks,

I think that only Barbara and I are impartial. James and Charlie have some sort of an axe to grind, typical politics. I agree with Barbara, Nutsy is the guy to beat. Eight years from now we might have another Illinois Senator as President. Do not sell him short. He has the look.

Hi Barbara: I'm glad you got an answer to your question. I didn't see the store in the photo, either, because it wasn't the corner location. BTW, how do you pronounce Beebe. Is it BEE-BEE or Bee-BAY or BEEB?

Elizabeth, it is Bee-bee.  Our Governor right now is named Mike Beebe, no relation to the city.  Ha. I think the answer to this question is the one with the coke sign is the building.  Beebe had a huge tornado a few years ago and may have damaged the top.  I'm still researching it.

Barbara,

The name of the store in the photo at the top of this blog was Powell and Company department store.  It was owned by R.V. Powell and all my years of growing up in Beebe was operated by his son-in-law, Lee Hayes.

Came across this site trying to find out info on this building!  I am a photographer and I LOVE LOVE LOVE this building inside and out.  I am trying to find out who has it to see if they will sell, but no informaiton on the building or online.  I found a Lee Hayes in Beebe but I'm not sure if it is right or not.  Does anyone have ANY information to help me out?

Erin, I have not been to Beebe to drive by this building lately.  My understanding is that the person who bought it was going to restore it.  If you'd like I can probably research it for you or at least give you the name of the realtor who sold it.

I believe this building was Powell's Appliances when I was growing up in Beebe back in the 50 's and 60's. And yes it is Beebe!
