My mom has macular degenerative disease in both eyes.  At one point it seemed likely she would become almost completely blind.  So I bought her a computer and started researching.  She loves to read.  The thought of her not being able to do so was devastating.

 

I did alot of research on the Internet.  There are a number of programs out there to have your computer read to you, many of them very expensive.  But I found a wonderful little program called "Text Aloud".  The basic cost is $29. or you can get a fancier version for $49.95 with additional voices.

It's very simple to install and to use. It resides on the toolbar of your web browser.  You turn it on and it will read any text on the page.  There are also a number of free libraries online. 

 It can also be a nice time saver as my computer can read to me while I clean my office. Or sometimes  wnen I am tired I let my computer do the work and read.

I am happy to say mom's vision improved enough for her to continue to read.
