Painted Cabinets ...In or Out?

This really shows how painting the cabinets can take a ho hum kitchen and make it look oohhh la la!

There has been a lot of debate on "to paint or not to paint".  Let's face it-decorative cabinets-whether they be plain painted or fauxed- are in right now.

How many clients have you gone to and pleaded with them to change the oak wood cabinets to something more "in this century"?

There was a very good blog in August of this year by Rachel Backus about this very subject with a lot of great comments:

Wood You tell a Homeowner to Paint the Cabinets?

10 years back, white was in--and it still can make a great impact as seen on some of the before and after shots in Rachel's blog.  But there are so many other options for cabinets now: from textured finishes, to hand painted designs.

Here is a kitchen I did a while back.I used a color palette that was chosen by the client and I played with the colors using different colors on the top and bottom.  I designed the back splash to tie the colors together.

These were done with a foam roller.

BTW.....

We all know that you can also change the hardware to quickly and inexpensively change the look of the cabinetry.  This company has original antique hardware from every era. Very, very cool stuff, and my clients love it.

Paint is versatile.  Find a color and style that suits the room and go for it!

Tami, Very nice way to update the kitchen, and bath too I would assume, but I would say it may depend on the price range.  Around here it probably would not fly on the  upscale housing, but who knows, it may become the latest trend!

Hi Tami, I really dislike the finish of my kitchen and bath cabinets and have been wondering if I have the time to tackle a project like this.  I have cut out a bunch of photos that I like.  It would definitely be an improvement over what I have.  I just can't justify new cabinetry for this home, so this is the way to go for me.

Tami ~ I always enjoy reading your posts, interesting information.  I am a white fan myself but would have a really hard time painting oak cabinets white.  It would be just my luck that the buyer would say I really like the house but wish they hadn't painted the cabinets.

Barb- I just went to grab my camera.  I was going to take a picture of what I did to my cabinets.  They look EXACTLY like the cabinets in 600,000 listing I showed this summer.  I could have bought them and spent big bucks but I did it on my own.  I wish I could find the stupid camera!

Kathy - You and Ann both need to see what I did with my cabinets.  Got to find my dang camera!

Kathy Kooyman - If you do them right it lookds really good.  The oak look is just out but what you can do with the oak is really cool.

Carole - It does make it look so much nicer.

Tami,   I think painted cabinets if done correctly look fabulous.   They can add a contemporary look and feel if done right.  So many options, but there are options and that's the good news.
