RD House Real Estate& Property Management play around Lake Union Panoroma Plaza one Bedroom units 750.00 MO Main PhotoLocation: Queen Anne Lake Union's proximity to and scenic views of Seattle make it a popular recreational spot. Kayaking is popular in the warmer months. Seaplanes operated by Kenmore Air land on and take off from the lake several times a day during the summer. Pleasure boats from Lake Washington pass through on their way to Puget Sound. The Center for Wooden Boats holds a yearly tall ship festival. ParksGas Works Park is the largest park on Lake Union and the most popular for Seattleites and visitors. It is the venue for summer concerts and one of the two major Fourth of July fireworks shows in Seattle. Other parks ring the lake, starting at Gas Works and going clockwise: North Passage Point Park, South Passage Point Park, Fairview Park, Terry Pettus Park, South Lake Union Park. SeaplanesMARITIME HISTORY
Run by volunteers, the Center for Wooden Boats, 206-382-2628; Web site, restores and maintains a fleet of historic rowboats and sailboats. Take a class here to learn about wooden boat building, or rent one of their boats to sail or row around the lake for an afternoon. The boathouse is open daily 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Right next door is the small Maritime Heritage Center, 206-447-9800; Web site, with vintage wooden boats, including the Wawona. Constructed in 1897, this was the largest three-masted sailing schooner built in North America and the first American ship to be listed as a National Historic Site. The restoration process is slow, partly because it is nearly impossible to get wood of the same quality; nearly all the virgin forests are gone. Pretty hard to find six- by eight-inch planks that are 120 feet long! The Wawona is open for self-guided public tours daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; donation requested.

Chandler's Cove houses the small and free Puget Sound Maritime Museum, 206-938-2397; Web site, with historic maritime photos and ship models on display. It's open Mon.-Sat. 11 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sun. noon-5 p.m. Several restaurants fill the rest of the small shopping area here, including Hooters, Chandler's Clubhouse, Dukes' Chowder House, and Cucina! Cucina! - a popular singles' meat market. Several other restaurants are at the nearby Yale St. Landing mall.

On the north end of Lake Union, Hanan Yachts, 2401 N. Northlake Way, 206-730-1835, is a great place to check out classic wooden boats for sale. It also has fine views across the lake from the end of their dock. Drop by on Tuesday evenings 6 a.m.-8 p.m., to watch sailboats joining a low-key "Duck Dodge" race around the lake.

GAS WORKS PARK
Built on the site of a former gas plant, Gas Works Park at N. Northlake Way and Meridian Ave. N is the world's only industrial site conversion park. Much of the original rusting gas equipment was incorporated into the park's landscaping, including a play barn that kids (and the homeless) love. Enjoy the views of Seattle and Lake Union from the industrial equipment and fly a kite from the hills here. The paved and very popular Burke-Gilman Trail begins west of Gas Works, skirts Lake Washington, connects to the Sammamish River Trail, and ends in Redmond's Marymoor Park, 24 miles away.

RECREATION EQUIPMENT INC.
There aren't many places where an outdoor adventure store makes it to a must-see list of sights, but Seattle's REI is just such a place. In business since 1938, REI is America's most successful cooperatively run company, with more than 60 stores scattered across the country. Its 80,000-square-foot flagship store at 222 Yale Ave. is a favorite of locals and visitors. The building's main attraction is a 65-foot indoor climbing wall - the world's tallest - just inside the entrance. It's open to all levels of ability; ask the belay experts for help. Test hiking boots or mountain bikes on the loop trail outside, enjoy an espresso next to the waterfall, plan trips with the help of Park Service or Forest Service personnel at the in-store Outdoor Recreation Information Center, or simply wander through the clothing and gear. REI also rents all sorts of outdoor equipment, including backpacks, climbing shoes, tents, sleeping bags, ice axes, and skis. The store features an auditorium where you can watch outdoor presentations and clinics most evenings. Below the store are three levels of free underground parking.

For more information on REI, call 206-223-1944 or 800-426-4840; Web site. REI Adventures, 800-622-2236, leads treks all over the world, including such close-in places as the Olympics, San Juan Islands, and Mount Rainier.
