I'd like to start spending less time traveling to the office, schleping whatever files I'm working on, setting up my laptop, packing it all up and then traveling back home.

I bought a great desk at a yard sale for $10 and had it refinished.

My Desk

I'm ready to sit at it and sell, sell, sell Real Estate in Roswell, Georgia!

I'm looking for suggestions and recommendations for all-in-one printers, on-line fax services and whatever else you think I might need to help my clients buy and sell houses from home.

As far as the printer goes...  I know I want one that automatically feeds paper for easier faxing and scanning, can print duplex, and has a fairly high print speed rate.

As for on-line faxing...  I have no clue what I want.

I'd love to know what you have in your home office.
What do you like best about it?
What do you not like?

I don't work all that much from home and therefore wouldn't recommend my printer/fax machine. It's good for light jobs only. But I've been using e-fax (efax.com) for a few years and am very happy with it. I've also recently heard about Mongo fax which I believe is free through NAR, but I haven't checked into it. Good luck w/ your new "digs"!

Nancy, i have been using efax for several years. You can get the fax sent to anywhere. Printer I think you have covered. Desk great buy! I do more work from home and find it more productive. My laptop is very small and ready to go.

We built our house with a home office in it and have several computers, fax, copier, etc....I am not going to recommend specific equipment but if you are really going to be at home more than anywhere else...I would consider a separate phone line for business....we still answe 8a-9p 7 days a week...but we know from the sound of the ring if it's business or pleasure...Good Luck !

Sorry I can't make any good recommendations as to a good multi-purpose COLOR printer, but I can highly recommend Brother multi-use machines.  I have one at my home which I have just beaten to heck over the past couple years.  It continues to run like a mule.  I don't have much need for color in the mortgage business, but since you do, I'd recommend that you check Brother products first, and then HP.  Also recomment efax.  Use it absolutely as much as you can, and you'll reduce paper tremendously.

Hey, Nancy
It's great to see your face pop up on my blog roll!  The desk was a GREAT find for $10.  I use MyFax.com for all of our incoming faxes. MyFax = Send 100/Receive 200 for $10 - eFax = Send 0/Receive 200 for $19.95.    As for a printer, we have a HP 7410 All-in-one in our home office and LOVE IT.  It's fast, quiet and does just about everything we could ask for.  Ours is a year or so old so I'm sure there's a newer model out by now.  We work from home about 40% of the time and for us, it works very, very well.  Good luck!

Nancy,

I bought an HP Office Jet Pro L7780 from Best Buy. My husband tell everyone that I treat it better than him LOL. The scanner has to be my favorite part.

When I was looking for it at Best Buy they showed me all the features on the display model. Then we started looking to see if there was one in the store for me. After 10 minutes of hunting there it was and it had a little sign that said it was on sale for $350.00 instead of $450.00. How could I pass this up. I go to check out and they ring it up at $450.00. I told them hey the sign said $350 and that's the only reason I decided to purchase it was because of the price (not really I just wanted it and would have paid $450). The young woman who had worked with me was called to the front and she told them that it was tagged at $350. So I got the Machine of my dreams and a great price.

OK Nancy I like all the gadgets but where is the TV or stereo system!  I have to have sound blasting from somewhere!  My kids where loud when they were young and I was used to noise so when nothing is happening I made sounds...Nice post....does the office come with a chair!  :-)  The camera is an essential part of the business now and I use a backup storage system for all my files as well.

Nancy, I work from home almost exclusively.  The best thing I did was get a second phone line.  The second best thing was to eliminate voicemail on that line and simply have it forward to my cell after 4 rings.  One voicemail to keep track of and calls forward to me when I am out of the office.  If I am on my business line, the calls just forward to my cell phone/voicemail automatically.  I left the DSL and fax on the main land line but for about $5 per month have a separate number for the fax, with its own ring tone.  I also have efax at no charge through my office.  The KW office staff just forward those faxes to me.

Also, great desk!  I'd suggest rotating it though so you can see the door - that is the power position for your desk - you will never see an executive with their back to the door.  Don't know if it works but why risk it?  My husband walked by my office today and saw me at my desk and just laughed, telling me I looked presidential.  I told him I just like to see the enemy approaching.  :)

Thanks everyone for your comments.

I think I'm going to go with an HP Office Jet.  Not sure which one yet...  but will get one that will print duplex and is wireless.  Denise- The one you got is a bit more than I can afford at this moment :-(

I'm still looking into an online fax system.  There are so many to choose from.

Gary - You crack me up.  Don't tell anyone, but my PC has a TV card in it!  My speakers and sub-woofer are right there on the desk!  And the chair was moved so I could get a pic of the desk.  And I purposefully did not show any more of the office as it's a total mess while I'm changing it out from a "personal" space to a "business" space.

Jesse?  Kathy?- Not sure who posted here.  Great to 'see' you, too!  I Googled your printer and think it might print too slow for my impatient self.  haha - But I'm still looking at that series.  Am also looking into Myfax.....   not sure that 100 outgoing pages will be enough, then again, I can always scan and Email most of the documents that I send out, right?

Susan - I thought about having my desk face the door but the light from the window created too much glare on my monitor.  Besides, I'd much rather ;look into the back yard as opposed to look at the bathroom across the hall from my office.  :-)

Colleen - When I Google Mongo Fax I don't see anything about NAR offering it.  I see boards in other states but not here in my area.  :-(

Everyone else - Thanks for your comments and suggestions.  I'll keep you posted with what I get.

Well, having a bathroom nearby is handy - that is my second requirement in my fantasy executive office - the final requirement is a reclining massage chair, or an on-call masseuse.  I'm still waiting.

Nancy, the first thing you need to do is to mess up that desk of yours!  It's far, far too tidy!

Nancy,

MongoFAX also has a pay-per-use service called MongoScan. It works the same way as MongoFAX does, but can be accessed at mongoscan.com.

Nancy, What a great way to start the new year!

Schleping, sounds painful and I would work at home more if I had to deal with that! LOL

Nancy, congrats on getting your office set up, I love the desk, it turned out beautiful.  I work at home all the time and I love my external drive for backing up all my data.  I've lost stuff one to many times.  That is one investment I would make and if you can't do that then I would get a jump drive that holds at least 8 Gb and save important stuff on it.
