Lately, I have read many articles about Realtors and their Brokers complaining about how bad their listings are going and how the economy is getting worse.  Well, since at this moment in time, if your hands are tied, make an effort and donate, either your time, your money or your service during these critical and unprecedented times.

With the holiday season around the corner, I honesty believe the best thing you can do for yourself (as a professional) and your family, is to donate your time, money or service to:

1)  "Toys for Tots" program, or the also called "Marine Toys for Tots" foundation,

2)  Deliver a turkey or other food items to the Salvation Army,

3)  Donate blood at your local Blood Clinics,

4)  Teach a child how to read,

5)  Teach a child how to do math,

6)  Volunteer at your local hospital,

7)  Volunteer at a soup kitchen for the needy,

8)  Volunteer to visit an elderly person without a family,

9)  Donate money to a charity of your choice,

10)  Volunteer with cancer patients in your local hospitals.

You may have have had a wonderful last few years prosporous, taking wonderful vacations, big toys for big boys and girls, etc.  While many of your children's friends or their friends' friends have had hardly any toys, clothing or food.

My point is it's high time, we quit complaining and share what you can with other families during their financial crisis.  Unfortunately, many of these families that need help are not just the poor and uneducated stereotypes from the past, but NOW include middle and upper class educated families that have fallen on hard times.

Yes, things are bad, but now is the time for people to come together and help each other.  This is like a hurricane or tornado, except it's much more widespread!  It's our duty as citizens of our countries (where ever you are on our Earth) to take care of the people who are less fortunate.

Ask yourself this question:  "Do our kids or other family members really need more toys, clothes or gadgets ?"  If the answer is NO, then do something different this year.   Helping others, also shows the human aspects of us and most importantly & I believe the BEST thing for our children is to see the real gift of Christmas, GIVING & SHARING....  It helped both my 20 and 16 yr old daughters to understand the meaning of holiday giving and to learn to accept what we have as a family.

Hi Stephen,

We do live in a wonderful North America, and as citizens and/or residents of both countries, we need to remember how lucky we are and instill that volunteering to our children and other younger relatives.

Ann-Marie:  What a great list of Christmas'sy things to do.  I call these things "caring behaviours."  (Notice the Canadian spelling... :) ?  When we do things like you have listed... yes, they are gifts to those who receive them... but in ways we may not be aware of... doing them is a gift back to ourselves, too.  Thanks for sharing.  Have a very Merry Christmas !

Ann-Marie, thanks for reminding us we have waaaaaaay more to be thankful for than we do reasons to complain.  I would add to that list, teach our children how to give back to the community.  When my son was young he learned animal rescue, feeding the homeless, dropping money in charity buckets, volunteering at a veterans hospital, helping kids his own age in school when they were sturggling to learn, and so much more,  because he had parents who set the example of giving back to the community.  What a wonderful world this would be if we would all just give back a little of what we have received.  Merry Christmas!

Ann Marie, What a wonderful group of links and I agree with you completely.  There are so many things we can do that cost nothing or we can spend some money but either way we are helping others.  I spend time at The Jones Manor, a non profit for the elderly--many of the residents have no one to visit and it's been a place that's near and dear to my heart.   No sense moaning over what we don't have when we can give back for all that we do!  Great post, I loved it.

Ann-Marie- I am a firm believer in Volunteering and giving back to the community.  I am also a firm believer that even if someone doesn't have much to give, everyone has something to give.  Thanks for the reminders.

Ann-Marie: Right on! It is in the giving of OUR GIFTS; our God-given talents, that we truly shine and celebrate all we were created to be. I have enough plastic STUFF, but some time spent with a friend would be great this year. Great post; Merry Christmas!

Hi Karen,

I agree, by giving time or money to a cause that you believe in, it does help ourselves also.  I belong to "Meals on Wheels" where I deliver food to the elderly locally here in Grand Bay-Westfield, the community outside of Saint John where I live.  I also donate blood to Canadian Blood Services.  My younger daughter, Caitlin will be 17 years old this Saturday, Dec 20th and asked me 6 months ago that she wanted to donate blood when she turned 17 yrs old (legal age for donating blood here).  So Monday, Dec 22nd, we both will go and donate blood (which I regularly do here and when I lived in the U.S.).  My older daughter started her blood donation schedule last year when she turned 19.  I volunteered for the last 4 years with the Saint John High School Parent/Student Board, where I met many students and clients.  It wonderful to give back to the community.  I think I just wrote an essay or is it a novel???  LOL

Hi Terry,

If more people did what we did with ourselves and our kids, the world would be so much kinder!!!    ;>)

Hi Carole,

I'm sure the elderly at The Jones Manor absolutely loved when you came in to spend time with them.  Some of them, are so adorable you want to hug them... LOL

                                        ;>)

Hi Kathy,

I'm a firm believer that what goes around, comes around!!!  If we go out of our way to help others, others will go out of their way for us....

                                ;>)

Hi Pete,

Compassion is a basic necessity of our existence!!!  Sometimes, we have to remember that giving, also gives us back a gift!!

There are a lot of people in need this year and I think it is time for everyone to give what they can to others.  Thanks for the list of links to worthwhile charities.  I am making gifts of food that I will deliver to some of the homeless people in my community.

Hi Rebecca,

EXCELLENT!!!  In this day of age, food is essential for "good endorphins" which will keep people psychologically going in these times of uncertainty...

Hi Ann-Marie - it is so easy to give because it's not just money that can be given, but time, food, toys, mittens, blood, etc.  And there are so many ways to do just that - thanks for that list!

And thank you for entering this post into the holiday acceptance contest.

Ann

Hi Ann,

I believe we are neighbors, my family & I will be passing by on the 25th to get to my 84 yr old aunt's home in Staten Island, New York.  Portsmouth is AWESOME, and the people seem very friendly.  I believe giving someone some skills (reading, math, etc) and your time or blood always helps someone else and maybe they can eventually recipricate and start the ball rolling by also volunteering their time or skill when they can....
