I just read and commented on a blog from an agent who wanted to get opinions on whether to discount commissions or not to: http://activerain.com/blogsview/834027/Is-cutting-your-commissions-the-same-as-cutting-your-throat
Ultimately Commissions must be looked at from the context of your overall business plan as an agent or a brokerage. The problem that I see with this question is ultimately that the agent doesn't have a defined business plan or model. If he/she did the answer would be obvious since it would be part of his/her model or it would be a strategic decision which everything the agent did would either support or be supported by.
Ultimately developing a business model as an agent really makes life a lot simpler. By knowing what you stand for, you know what you don't or shouldn't do. Without a business model there is a lot of spinning of ones wheels that takes place and you are always standing in the same place year after year asking yourself what happened.
Build your business model and the rest of your business should be easy.
All the Best,

Thank you for mentioning my post in this post. You are a magic man. You have determined I have no plan since I ask others their thoughts on a question that faces every new agent that come to this business. This site is designed to help others and the question was posted with that thought in mind. Having done this for the past 30 years, I can assure you it has not been by the seat of my pants. While I have not had the benefit of your counsel, I have somehow managed to scribble out a game plan that has kept me going the past 30 years. Your comments about needing a busness plan and model are valid and new agents should heed this advice. Your assumptions on me are dead wrong.
