Teton MountainsThe Town of Jackson and surrounding county (Teton) have been struggling with growth issues for years. The raw beauty and recreational opportunities of our valley continue to attract more and more people, where housing is limited by the geography and the fact that 97% of the land in the county is owned by federal, state, or local government.

Demand for housing far exceeds supply, and prices long ago became unaffordable for those living paycheck to paycheck. The most common solutions proposed fall into two camps: Build More, and Close The Door.

Build More strategies include increasing building heights, increasing allowed densities in town, rezoning county land to allow housing, requiring developers to provide price-restricted housing, and using public dollars to build housing.

Close The Door proponents include such groups as Don't Let The Hole Lose It's Soul and Save Historic Jackson Hole.

Each group feels passionately about their cause, and there are great divides even within the groups about the appropriate policies. Local politics in Jackson are not for the timid.

There are no easy answers. People move here to enjoy the wildlife, the vistas, the clean air, the lack of traffic, etc. Yet every additional person that moves here contributes to the loss of wildlife habitat, increases in traffic and changing a small town into a larger town.

What do you think? Build more? Or Close the Door?

Tim, This is a hot topic. We have similar issues here, a mountain community west of Colorado Springs. I honestly don't know where to weigh in on this. I have feelings that go both ways.

Debi, The pendulum swings back and forth here. We had a large downzone in 1994, and those regulations have been progessively loosened over the past decade. The issue is again a hot topic, and political candidates now variously run as pro-growth, no-growth, smart-growth, etc. I'm guessing with the loss of jobs that we are now experiencing due to the near complete stop in construction, some no-growthers will reconsider their position. Time will tell.

Tim: Great picture of the mountains.  Is that a view you can see from Jackson?  WOW sounds like your little town has a stumbling block.  Good old town with old family and ideas meets the high demands of someone who has not a clue of this little old town!  Best of luck.  Keep us posted on the Housing / Real Estate in Jackson / Tenton.

You have the same dilemma as we do on an island.  I think as long as people keep reproducing, they might as well get used to the fact that more and more people need places to live.  Get over it and deal with it, I say.

Michelle - That's the view of the Tetons, as seen from about 3 miles north of town. Thanks for checking in!

Georgina - you are absolutely right. No one here (well, not too many, anyway) realistically thinks you can actually close the door. The discussions center more on whether to develop more acreage out in the county, or to allow buildings to get taller in the town.

Build more - on the Contour.

Sorry, couldn't resist.  Growth happens.  People need to deal with it.
