100 Comments on Marketing Technology: What is all that fun costing you on Facebook?
Charles-It is always prudent to know who you are associating with :) If you don;t know the people and don;t want them following you then you can block them :)
Sonja-Agreed...it seems deceptive the way it is, but they do tell you in the terms which we know many don't read.
Glen- You have some good points.....however getting info from our AR Profile and giving them all our contacts is different.
Elizabeth- I am glad I'm not alone. I knew I couldn't be, but unless you ask you never know :)
Jeff- thanks, and I think most of us have clicked on at least one or two before we figured out to ignore them :)
Joddie-Sounds like you are using FB in the manner that is best for you, congratulations for ignoring the other stuff :)
Lizette- The "big delete"...I like that :)
Mike-Hi...yes I too feel bad if it's an AR'r, but I would feel worse if I was in any way involved with inadvertently giving your personal info away.
geri- Sounds like you did what many of us did....nothing :) I think it will be in all our best interests later to ignore all that extra stuff.
Teri- from this Post I realize how many people experienced the same thing.....but I am still shocked at that IQ Test-that one has to be illegal.
David- You're welcome and have fun, but just do it with common sense ....
Hi Kathy, this is a good head's up for those of us who are still just dipping our toes in the FaceBook waters. Unfortunately, the time is probably coming, sooner than later, when we simply have NO PRIVACY left at all. I know I have a paranoid streak which whispers that the government encourages Google... on down, to collect our information. I'm sure it goes a long way toward controlling terrorism...but the price will always be at the expense of our privacy. It's a new world...but we still do have some choices left, like not accepting those third party sites. Great Post!
I don't think that anyone can fight the reality that these social sites will impact business. However, we do have to offer some of of personal lives. This information inevitably will be open to the public.
I don't feel quite so bad for not getting into facebook. I signed up a while back but I don't understand all of it. The last thing I want is to bombard people with unwanted stuff. I think I will stay in the back seat until I understand what it all means.
Kathy: Every time I read stuff like this I find more and more reasons not to use these kinds of sites. Thanks again for sharing.
kathy, I have been mullng over blooging about Facebook safety issues. I ignore most of these requests. I was always suspicious, but then got caught up for a time with couple seeing everyone else on board. Recently I deleted all the apps I signed for originally except for birthdays. I just might go and disable that one too. I am so afraid of not only info getting out, but viruses and malware getting in. I just cleaned my laptop from mlaware~ not a clue where it came form but could have been through Facebook!
This is a terrific post and a must read!
Kathy, that is one of my biggest issues with facebook. Many of us use it to stay in touch with each other then you get a group who will start with all that other stuff. It really gets in the way of keeping in touch with old clients, referrals, friends, agents, etc. You know good old fashioned networking on a more personal basis then AR.
I just KNEW I didn't like Facebook! Thanks for telling me why.
I think most people don't take into consideration the type of security issues 3rd party apps create, especially when associated with something as popular as FB. As professionals who use it both as a social and work tool we have an responsibility to protect not only our personal information, but that of our friends and clients....and now we have some good ammo as to why I ignore half the silliness happening on FB. Thanks for heads-up on the latest twist in mining data.
Thanks for the information, Kathy. There are a few that are prompting me to get on Facebook, but I haven't taken the time to do it. This is helpful to know.
If you are comfortable with yourself personally and professionally, what is there to fear? Other than meeting new people.
thank you for this information Kathy! I've seen all of the spam when you click on one of those "other requests" I will let others know. You should post this information somewhere on Facebook for others if you haven't done so already.
Wow! I missed this post, that is until I just saw what Sally is dealing with. I too have felt bad about not responding to the requests. But, my gut said, 'don't click that button'! Danger Will Rogers!! Thanks for posting this! Merry Christmas!!
Sorry for not coming back to answer your comments earlier.....
Gail- Yes we have given up a lot of our privacy, however we still have some choices. It's a sign of the times I guess.
Remo Realty Group- I would agree wtih that :)
Rebecca-I think some of it looks so innocent that people just get hooked into the "social" part, and some like me actually feel guilty for not responding....and whala....we click on the links and have now compromised our friends and ourselves without even knowing it.
Karen-It's Ok to use some of the site, just not the fun parts of it. And be careful of clicking links.
Ginger-After reading your comment I went to check if I had any app's and sure enough I did....thank you. The Birthday one is one I especially don't like because once someone has your name and your birthday they have way too much info...
Marie- I know...it can be distracting, but i think it's like everything else, after awhile you don't even see it.
Ann- I'm smiling here :) So I guess I won't look for you over there :)
Michael- We do indeed need to be careful of 3rd party apps.
Laura-Common Sense on the Internet goes a long way :) I like FB but don't participate in the "fun".
Remo-How about the malware people have gotten, the unwanted text messages, the $9.98 charge that many people didn't even know they had signed up for just by taking that IQ Test. Deceptive Marketing isn't about meeting new people. At least this is my opinion.
Patricia- I never thought about that, good idea....you can also put the link for your friends :)
Doreen- I am a firm believer in trusting our instinct or "gut" and see it proved a good thing for you :)
Facebook? Totally useless for business... I signed up to check on the kids, to see who their friends were... so far so good... but personally I don't have any friends (except for the kids), no pics, no info... why would I bother? I have a biz blog that works just great and lots of regular readers (which I don't consider my "friends")! And I work around the clock! Facebook? Unless we have lots of spare time, it's pointless! And... if I ever have some spare time, I certainly won't spend it on FB! ;-)
Lori-It sounds like you have a plan for your online activities...and that's a good thing. Since you really only use FB to check on the kids then you wouldn't be one of the ones that would be affected by this Post, unless of course your kids participate in these "fun" things and your name goes out to the 3rd party sites. Your name would go out if they have you listed as a friend whether you are or not. That's the danger :)
Started on Facebook to actually get my son's high school music department together. What fun to keep in touch - I do try to keep that as a personal site and not allowing many R.E. related info in there (sorry), sometimes I have to keep things none-business... A great place to keep in touch with my kids, families and personal friends!
Sylvia-I think it's great that you set your own boundaries and use FB the way you do. We can't work all the time, and not everyone cares about what we do :)
Im very wary of all those 3rd party sites and what they really do.
Andrew- and for good reason :)
