I actually have been thinking about writing a blog about my "Desk Buddy" for a couple months now. Then yesterday I noticed two posts about "Desks" and saw Sarah's post This Picture On My Desk Keeps Me Sane and read about the new group. Well, now I really have to write about my "Desk Buddy"!!

Everyone in my office loves my blue green Desk Buddy and he seems to love them back. He is a Beta Fish and his name is Buddy. And yes, they (fish) do have emotions!

A Year and a half ago for my birthday two of my "agents" got me a beta fish for my desk he didn't make it but a year, but I got myself a 2nd one and he is doing much better then the first. The agents that have floor-duty on the weekend really like having him around, they say he keeps them company. They even feed him for me as long as I leave fish food out for them.

It's really hard to get a good photo of a fish gang!

When I get to work in the morning he is usually at the bottom of his tank hiding in his rock. When he sees me he comes swimming up to the top to greet me and eat his breakfast. He loves to watch me during the day, he seems fascinated with what I am doing if I am writing something out in from of him or doing something where he can see my hands. If I see he is getting bored I will hang his mirror on the side of his tank so he can get some exercise.

He even likes when I stick my finger in the tank, he'll come up and rub on it, sometimes nibble on it too. Beta's love attention, almost like a tiny underwater hairless dog. I'll sit her and talk to him on occasion, but Midori will sing to him if I have the day off and have asked her to feed him. I guess you can say my Desk Buddy keeps me and Midori Sane!

They have come out with some pretty cool tanks for beta's now too. There is one that is a office setting, complete with a desk, chair and computer with a filing cabinet and of course a plant.

I almost got it but then thought about how hard it would be to catch the little guy when it came time to do the weekly tank cleaning and thought oh that's not going to be easy!

So I stuck with a standard 1 gallon hex tank and just didn't put the bubble thing in. (Beta's don't like current in their water). I have a cloth plant (I had 2 but one got icky, need to replace it) and a rock with a hole in it for him to play in. Plastic plants sometimes are sharp and will rip their delicate tails.

I would really like to get a bigger tank so I can decorate it better but then I would lose more workspace, plus it would be harder to clean and with Beta's you're supposed to do a complete tank cleaning once a week and remove the icky stuff every couple days The hex 1 gallon tank is a good size to take in the bathroom and clean out and just takes a few minutes.

I hope you all enjoyed meeting my Desk Buddy. For all of you who have animal loving assistants out there a Desk Buddy would be a great present if your in a quandary to get them something.

It really is hard to get a good photo of him!

But, trust me! He is pretty!

FishHi, Lysa!

This is Captain Jack Sparrow Fish.  I bought him for our exchange student last summer so she could have a pet of her own.

Now she's back in Japan and I have a kitchen fish.  He enjoys watching me cook, as long as it's not seafood.

Laurie, Oh, I bet you guys miss him. Midori keeps threatening to get us a office turtle next! Hows Long Beach??

Sarah HI! Love the name! Yikes no lid? Does he jump out? My first beta jumped right out of his tank, thats when we went to one with a lid. Thankfully he did that while I was sitting there.

I love the pic's of buddy, yes I feed him, I sing to him, sometimes I just stare at him rather than the wall when I am in deep thought!  He has become a very important part of the office.  I laugh as these big strong guys in our office turn to mush and count out the food that Buddy needs and takes the time to feed him throughout the day.  Also, Lysa is not exagerating at all he stares at her so lovingly and watches her work.  Buddy is our mascot!!!!!

Midori, I think I'm going to have to sneak in on my next day off to witness what you just described! How funny! Oh when we had a stranger walk in today? Buddy decided to try to jump out of the tank at him! True story!

Moderators! Thanks for featuring Buddy! That's so nice of you!

I need a desk buddy so when I'm talking to myself (which I do regularly) and people in the office think I'm crazy, I can say I'm talking to my fish.  Thanks for the beautiful pics

We used to fish-sit for our neighbors and kept the red beta fish in his bowl on the raised portion of our kitchen counter over the sink. We discovered that when my husband was drying the dishes with a dishtowel with three long wide stripes, one red, one white, one blue - that the fish would go crazy - like waving a red cape in front of a bull.

I had a beta, it lasted for ever! Put it through an awful lot moving and everything, and it just kept going. Nice post.

I have a "desk buddy" -- it is my cat.  She loves to get attention -- so she sits on my files -- time to get to work -- she can shred papers -- good to get rid of old files -- and she even can type -- she like to "hunt and peck" on my computer.  She even like to talk on the phone MEOWI - So, desk buddies are a lot of fun and help us get through the day.

Hi Lisa, Oh Saltwater tanks are hard to take care of but they are beautiful. I would love to own one! I hear there are services out there you can pay to come to your home that clean them for you. Thanks for the sweet words!!

Hi Dick & Sandy, Oh I'm looking forward to seeing the picture, he sounds pretty! My food is 1.99 but I think it lasts like 2 or 3 months, plus I get him the bloodworms for treats that last forever, boy he loves those, he really gets excited when he sees me get the bag out of my drawer.

I love beta's. My favorite fish were gold fish. I had one for a year, then went on vacation. I asked my mom to take care of him but he died. The longest living gold fish I had was 3 years old.

Cool pictures, I would not have room for a fish tank on my desk.  I barely have room for my laptop with all the junk that I accumulate.

Jane, Thanks! Your words always leave a huge smile on my face! I love taking pictures, I'm so glad they came out with digital camera's otherwise I couldn't afford this hobby!

Randy, I have a nice L shaped desk, when I got to this office I had to bring a TV tray in to move some items over to the side to make room for Buddy's tank tho.. now we can both watch the birds and squirrels that play in the shrubs outside our office.

My son received a Beta as a Yankee Swap gift this Christmas - one of the most unique ones I've ever seen! I never thought of a fish as having personality, but these guys sure seem to - this one follows you around watching your every move.  Very cool.  Cute post! Liz

Maureen, problem with getting fish is you don't know how old they are when you get them! Also some need a filtration system to supply oxygen to the water, Beta's don't require that, matter of fact they don't even like it :)

Liz, Thanks! I too felt the same way, but they love action, they like to be in the middle of it so they can watch everything and stay entertained. Bete's really do get bored. I put a mirror on the side of buddy's tank so he can "fight" for 10 minutes a day. He loves that.

Can't you tell by their teeth?  I was listening to something recently (I have no idea what ) and they were talking about how important it is to look at a horses teeth to tell how old they are.  I had a series of gold fish that died in short order in college because of the neat bowl I was given as a gift.
