I actually have been thinking about writing a blog about my "Desk Buddy" for a couple months now. Then yesterday I noticed two posts about "Desks" and saw Sarah's post This Picture On My Desk Keeps Me Sane and read about the new group. Well, now I really have to write about my "Desk Buddy"!!
Everyone in my office loves my blue green Desk Buddy and he seems to love them back. He is a Beta Fish and his name is Buddy. And yes, they (fish) do have emotions!
A Year and a half ago for my birthday two of my "agents" got me a beta fish for my desk he didn't make it but a year, but I got myself a 2nd one and he is doing much better then the first. The agents that have floor-duty on the weekend really like having him around, they say he keeps them company. They even feed him for me as long as I leave fish food out for them.
It's really hard to get a good photo of a fish gang!
When I get to work in the morning he is usually at the bottom of his tank hiding in his rock. When he sees me he comes swimming up to the top to greet me and eat his breakfast. He loves to watch me during the day, he seems fascinated with what I am doing if I am writing something out in from of him or doing something where he can see my hands. If I see he is getting bored I will hang his mirror on the side of his tank so he can get some exercise.
He even likes when I stick my finger in the tank, he'll come up and rub on it, sometimes nibble on it too. Beta's love attention, almost like a tiny underwater hairless dog. I'll sit her and talk to him on occasion, but Midori will sing to him if I have the day off and have asked her to feed him. I guess you can say my Desk Buddy keeps me and Midori Sane!
They have come out with some pretty cool tanks for beta's now too. There is one that is a office setting, complete with a desk, chair and computer with a filing cabinet and of course a plant.
I almost got it but then thought about how hard it would be to catch the little guy when it came time to do the weekly tank cleaning and thought oh that's not going to be easy!
So I stuck with a standard 1 gallon hex tank and just didn't put the bubble thing in. (Beta's don't like current in their water). I have a cloth plant (I had 2 but one got icky, need to replace it) and a rock with a hole in it for him to play in. Plastic plants sometimes are sharp and will rip their delicate tails.
I would really like to get a bigger tank so I can decorate it better but then I would lose more workspace, plus it would be harder to clean and with Beta's you're supposed to do a complete tank cleaning once a week and remove the icky stuff every couple days The hex 1 gallon tank is a good size to take in the bathroom and clean out and just takes a few minutes.
I hope you all enjoyed meeting my Desk Buddy. For all of you who have animal loving assistants out there a Desk Buddy would be a great present if your in a quandary to get them something.
It really is hard to get a good photo of him!
But, trust me! He is pretty!
