Making Your Space Festive for the Holidays Fabia MacNair, Styling Spaces
Whatever your tradition, make this the year that you embrace holiday decorating with enthusiasm as you engage the entire family, listen to upbeat music, and grab a cup of cheer.
•· Create a festive outdoor look by decorating your porch light or mailbox with evergreen branches. Select branches with various textures and colours and layer them together with the largest at the back, shorter branches in front. Tie them together with strong wire, add a bow, then hang them upside down from your lights or your mailbox.
•· When putting together a planter, always have a thriller (focal point), a spiller (kept low, and cascades over the side) and a filler (to fill in the gaps and complete the look). Use natural items such as small topiaries, cedar boughs, pomegranates, pinecones or Osage oranges.
Then head inside...
Maximize impact by decorating key interior features such as the staircase, mantle, or dining room table.
•· Garland is available at a number of price points, making it accessible to everyone. Personalize the staircase décor by garnishing the garland with ribbon, bows, berries, ornaments or inexpensive jewellery and beads. Hang it in a scallop shape so it is still possible to hold the handrail.
•· I recommend using natural boughs on the mantel for a fresh look. Use boughs with a longer shelf life such as cedar, pine, and magnolia because they dry out slower. Incorporate varying textures and colours. Layer and bind them and where two groupings come together place a candle or ornament to create a focal point. Fill in gaps with bows, candles and fruit.
•· The natural theme can be brought through to the dining room table. You may want to also incorporate a pillar candle in a hurricane jar or float cranberries in water. Try filling champagne glasses with salt and placing a candle in each. Keep in mind that guests want to see each other at the table, so don't obscure their view with a tall, bulky piece.
