Wednesday some friends and I fished Wolverine Lake (too) early in the morning. While conditions were not ideal, we did boat one walleye on minnow tipped jigs. They dropped me off at 9:00 am, and caught their limit of fish before the morning was done.
Not to give away any secret fishing spots, the best walleye fishing is usually on the drop offs to each of the submerged lakes. Northern pike, bass, crappie, and blue gill are also plentiful in the lake.
Wolverine Lake was at one time a string of six lakes; Spring, Mayie, Pork Barrel, Bickling, Taylor, and Bradley. Around 1920, area land owners dammed the river and created a 270 acre lake. The remnants of a road, plenty of tree stumps, lots of shallow water, and special watercraft regulations make for a great fishing lake.
Wolverine Lake is a public access lake, with a concrete ramp and parking, off Glengary Rd. There is enough parking for several cars and boat trailers,
Wolverine Lake is fully developed except for a wetland area along Benstein Rd. This lake is used for fishing, water skiing, jet-skiing, boating (power and non-power), and swimming. (Lake Map from thesportsmansconnection.com CD) Like many Michigan inland lakes, Eurasian Watermilfoil, Curlyleaf pondweed, and Chara along with native aquatic plants are being controlled by harvesting and herbicide application. Additional information on these plants can be found on the Michigan Sea Grant site.
