Waking up this Monday morning to dark skys, rain, and a cold house this is what I thought of....oh good we will have a White Christmas.  That is something to be thankful for when you live in an area that is typically sunny and warm on Christmas.  I love that feeling "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas"..and today it is 10 days before Christmas. That can be a good thing or one that brings a lot of stress, but it doesn't have to. Here are some ways to Market Yourself for cheap or free......

Last year I wrote about How to Market Yourself with Natures Gifts and I am updating it for this year.

Gifts from Photos

Photos make great Holiday (or anytime) Gifts, and Great Marketing Tools.  Your Clients, Family, Friends, and Just about anyone appreciates Custom Gifts.  You can also make a Gallery at Zazzle and make your own gifts for people to buy, or friends to look at.  My Gallery is Sunset Art Works...and I will be working on it more this year.

  • Puzzles- This can be of the Grandkids, Kids, Adults, a Certain Home, anything...
  • Mousepads  - customize for anyone that uses a computer, useful and unique
  • Calendars - almost any Drug Store can make these if you don't have a Photo Printer, or order online  You can also make your own for downloading good for clients-look at Marti Garaughty's tutorials for making your own Calendars (Art of Marketing You Group)
  • Personalized Thank You Cards -  (we all need Thank You Cards, and they can be done inexpensively, yet Professionally) If you're very creative make your own paper too :)
  • Stamps- This is a great gift for anyone.....(this is just one of many sites....Oprah recommended this site ) You can even put your logo, Web site, anything to Market Yourself (just make sure if you use words they can be read)  I made Stamps from Zazzle with a picture and REALTOR verbiage on it.

Another Photo Tip:  If you have a Photo Printer you can change the setting and use Watercolor Paper (it's not photo paper) to really get a special print for framing.......play with the settings first. I use this to get a special effect on my Prints.

We all have things in Nature that can be used for a gift.

Either a gift to give, or a gift of spending time with kids.  One of my favorites is to look for driftwood, or River Root, and make it into something.  I have made Eagles, Wolves, and other things from  pieces of wood.  Once I walked a river in Europe for over an hour just looking for that one piece of wood that "spoke" to me, that one piece that was going to be my next project.  I finally found it and made a beautiful Eagle....very little was needed as it already looked like one.

Look at the Santa below on the left, I could see the hat, and see the face so knew this was the piece I wanted. The wood already had the form. This activity is a great one for kids, getting some exercise, and working together or alone.

Old Fashioned Santa from Driftwood

Supplies Needed:

  • Paint-keep it simple.....this keeps the cost down. I use Acrylics less than $1 a bottle
  • Twine if you want to hang something
  • Dremel or something to poke a hole if you are making Ornaments
  • Xacto Knife- DO NOT let kids use this unsupervised...I don't even let them if I am watching because the first time I used one I cut every single finger and thumb....and it can hurt LOL :)

Now for the Procrastinators and Kids:

  • Take those empty Toilet Paper Rolls and either you or a child can write a Poem, letter, or whatever you want.  Kids love to draw pictures. After you're done, roll it up and put it inside the tube....you can also put 3-4 nuts inside if you choose.  Then wrap the tube like an old fashioned candy.....a  unique recycled gift that is personalized for each person.
  • Painted Nuts- After you eat the nuts, Walnuts work best....clean out the inside.  Paint a scene...you will probably have to cut up one of your paint brushes to only have one to 3 hairs.....keep it simple as it is tedious work. Use a Dremel or something to make a hole for hanging and for string use dental floss.

Enjoying the Holidays is about Family, Friends, Good Meals and being thankful for what we have.

Nature has always been the Best Gift of the Season

I certainly admire agents who can maintain these contacts.  I just can't do it.  I did in years past, but got away from it.  I give a very nice gift at settlement and that's it for me.

I often get chocolates or coffee from my buyers.  That is touching.

My goodness, I'd go blind trying to paint a scene in nut shells, but I love the idea.  I think I'm safer doing things with photos.

I really love the Santas on he wood. I used to craft a lot and sell at shows, and I did a lot with "found" items. You make me miss it.

Um, did I read this correctly? Did you make/paint those Santa's ?  Those are gorgeous.  Wow, how talented you are.  If I tried to do any of that I would be a disaster.  I have a question for you.  The water color paper, if you print a picture or photo on it, does the paper make the photo look like a water color - or is that a software program?  You so smart.  :)

marti- you have my empathy for sure....:)

Carole- We al have our creative parts.....mine just happen to be with crafts and photography

Leslie-If you miss it, it's in your blood LOL :)  I love making things.

Those wooden St Nicks are the coolest things ever! WOW! You are so creative! All these ideas are wonderful for getting the gears moving with ideas...I, too, have loved the "candy wrapper" idea with a cardboard tube...Used to do it for my little ones---with big jingle bells added... but nuts are good, cuz you can eat them. Thanks for a wonderful post!

I have been giving a small 12 or 14 page Holiday or seasonal cookbook to my contacts for a couple years now. I get them from my wifes business and they cost me a total of about $2.00 each to purchase and mail. If you would like to see them or find them let me know and I will send you the link to her site.

Happy Holidays to all.

Audrey- Yes I painted the Santa.....it's all about the wood not the paint, and I know you can do it if you can cook.....they are interrelated :)  anyway for the watercolor paper no it doesn't make it look like a complete watercolor but close....the effect is really nice.  Just change the settings on your printer...play with it.  I have a photo printer and it has a setting for thick paper.  I want to try it on homemade paper but those have a lot of water so not sure if it would be smart :)

JB-thanks :)

Linda- Oh I can use one very well now....it only took me having all my fingers bandaged to learn LOL :)  I don't let the kids use them though even the older one cuz just one slip and OUCH :)

Richard- Yes, Costco is a great resource.....they also will take your memory stick and make CD's, or take your old film negatives and make CD's....

Carole-Thanks....... I was on Twitter and Audrey told me LOL....I thought she was kidding :)

Alexsandra- When you make your Gallery can you come back here and leave us a link?  I think that is a great site :)

Mara- OK...when you come we can walk the beach looking for driftwood.  I can't believe I was in WA on 2 different beaches full of driftwood and I only brought home a couple pieces :)  I used to do this stuff a lot more before I found AR LOL :)

Svetlana- Happy Holidays to you too, and thank you for commenting :)

Bob & Carolin-  thank you and Happy Holidays to you both :)

Roland- A puzzle of someone's new house for their kids works nicely too :)

I printed this post our for my wife as we and my oldest daughters are the creative ones in the family. I think the toliet paper tube idea is a great one and I think the photo idea is even something I could do.

I know my wife already does stuff like this, so if she has another couple ideas are we allowed to add them to the comments to help others?

Todd- Absolutely...this Post is for all of us to get ideas :)  And I love seeing what others do...last year Cynthia T. made some great things and she has posted hers into the Fairies and Pink Elephants Group.

Elizabeth- Why thank you Mame....my very grown up daughter still has a poem I wrote on handmade paper when she was about 6 years old.  It hangs in her room, and the only cost was looking into my heart and putting it on paper :)

Christine-Thanks.....and I too have gotten away from most of my crafts....the grand kids and nephew though always want me to teach them something so that gives me incentive :)

Rob- Thanks- might want to watch the advertising in others blogs....:)

Sandy- Thanks..

Missy- Ahh you must have heard Linda telling me to stay away from the knoives LOL :)  These are fun to make and best part is anyone can do it....imagination :)

Diane- Absolutely....and the possibilities for inexpensive, cheap, or FREE gifts is only limited by our imagination.

Neal- :) :)

The photos are a great idea.  I'm thinking of taking photos of my new clients in front of their new home next year and then making a calendar for them with it.  We bought a car  one time and the dealership did that.

I hear that the Post Office is now doing personnel stamps from photos? Are mousepads still being used? We have plenty of refrigerator

magnets... could always use more. Coffee mugs with emblems might be good. Illustrated calenders are a nice personal touch. Pens are

nice but overused.. the doctor's office and car dealers have a truckload. Let me know if anyone has any other ideas.

Kathy,

What a great post.  I just bookmarked stamps.com.  I really like the activies you have on here for kids.  Very useful, mine just started their winter vacation on Friday (early due to snowstorm that closed school for the day) and I am always looking for something fun for them to do.

Hi Kathy, I used to paint (that was life B4 real estate) and make my own Christmas cards in pen & ink on homemade paper (that I bought).  I totally agree that the best gifts are from your own hands.  Ater I married & moved away from my best friend I started a Christmas tradition. I'd call her on Christmas day & read (act out) an equestrian story. It would usually end by having us both in tears!
