On Thanksgiving Day I wrote a post on Knoxville's Empty Stocking Fund. This post highlighted the need in many communities of those who are less fortunate. This time of year often brings out the generous spirit in many people.

During times of economic volatility with many layoffs and firings, more people than ever are turning to charity organizations for assistance. The catch 22 is that the very economic issues that have prompted the need for more requests for assistance is the leading contributor to the decline in contributions. This year those who may have been contributors in the past to these organizations are now in need of assistance from them. As the pool of people who are financially able to make charitable contributions gets smaller, those who are still able to contribute are pressed to do more. I think that those who are not financially able to give money this year may opt for giving of their time instead. This donating of time and effort has in the past been more difficult to obtain as it is easier to write a check than take time out of our busy lives. I do want to let everyone know that donating time is just as valuable as donating money or items.

In Knoxville, the Empty Stocking Fund has a huge operation that feeds about 3,500 families and supplies toys to about 2,300 children. Though the application time for assistance only lasted through November, if you are in need contact the Empty Stocking Fund through the Community Action Committee (CAC) Christmas Clearing House Line at 865-524-2521. The Empty Stocking Fun is still in need of volunteers.

Rich, I hope people do volunteer to help, even if only for a few hours---you always feel better when giving.

Rich - I hope that in a difficult year, those who are fortunate to "HAVE" do not forget to give what they can , even if just a little to those who "HAVE NOT"
