Tuesday, December 16, 2008: Dear Richard...

I am in a private war with myself from dawn to dusk. I do not want to compare my career with the career of anyone else because I'm not living their life, I am living my life. I do not want to compare my blog posts to the blog posts of others because they do not know what I know, they can not get into my head, or discern my heart, or recognize my fears, joys, pains and disappointments that hide within my soul. I like being my own unique self, and I have a question for you regarding the right-wrong squabbles that have been going on in the forums:

As a respected member of this community who is very dearly loved, what advice can you give new bloggers who are just starting out to help them find their own voice?

I have found mine and have been answering this question from a new writer's point of view. I would like to hear answers from people who have been around longer than I have. There is no "right" or "wrong" but there is inspiration waiting in the wings of your collective wisdom.

When did you know you had finally discovered your writing style (or unique voice)?

My favorite Woody Allen quote is, "Eighty percent of success is showing up." My opinion is to write whatever you are moved to write and the voice will eventually be heard. I am not sure I have found any particular style.

Hmmm...my first thought is to not comment on posts that will lead to an argument. I can remember as a newbie giving my two cents on a member's post about the BBB. It was my unique experience. Well...she shot me down pronto and said my comment was untrue. I never forgot it. She's no longer in this world, but I was not one of her fans.

I don't write posts that are controversial either. I hate to argue cause I want to win. Growing up with an older brother will make you that way.

Grip it and rip it. Nothing more to it than that. I've written about damn near everything under the sun with varying degrees of success. Some are funny, some are a bit sad, some are personal, some contain cold hard Real Estate facts/data. I have never once sought to write in any expression other than my own, and roundly distrust those who offer free advice ;)

Do your own thing. It has served you well to this point, has it not?

When did you know you had finally discovered your writing style (or unique voice)?

When I stopped caring about what anybody else thought. It happens to most women when they turn 40, btw. But I've always been a rebel, very independent, yet careful not to step on anybody's toes. Nowadays, I don't give a (expletive). I like who I am and if somebody else doesn't, there's something wrong with that person, heh, heh.

C- As I have not been here very long, you might want to delete my comment. I wouldn't be upset if you did, I routinely overstep my bounds...!

I have yet to find my writing style or voice. I notice that its much easier to comment on other's posts. Why? I definitely have ideas and opinions of my own, but putting them into full posts on my blog is really hard for me. Joining into an ongoing conversation about a topic interesting to me is just easier.

Also, I think I spend a lot of time reading other people's blogs and commenting on them, then run out of time to post about a topic on my blog.

I have noticed, too, that I tend to write longer comments than a lot of people out here...is that wrong? rude? have I broken an unspoken rule about commenting/posting? I don't know...I'm such a neophyte in this techie world...

Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading the comments of the many wonderful writers on AR and learning even more from them in response to your query. Thanks for asking, CT-S!

Amy, I have written what some people consider "an entire post" in several comment sections on blogs (LMAO). It's your comment, sweetie. Make it. BTW, it takes a lot to make me delete anyone. ;-)

As a newbie I'm still on the journey . . . what is interesting? - how to be concise and clear? Informative yet amusing. While I'm so passionate about what I do, how can I touch someone through words . . . way out of my skillset. Glad I'm here so I can read and follow the lead of some of the best!

Carolyn, As you know I'm just starting to discover my style though I can't put a label on it, One thing I know for sure is that I am learning from the best bloggers in the world!

Margaret, I second that. I'm following some of the best and brightest minds around like a love struck puppy (LOL). I love recreational reading in Club Chaos. Great fun. :-)

C - I'm with Elizabeth. If you don't like what I say, just bite me! But seriously - even though I'm a newbie, I don't feel like one anymore. I was scared to death when I hit the send button on Ralph's first "Real Estate Report." But you know what? It got a few laughs and made a few people feel better that day. And that's what it's all about, isn't it? Helping your fellow man? The people here at AR are some of the warmest, nicest and friendliest people I have (and you will) ever met.
