I just saw a report on what the weather predictions are for this coming fall, winter and spring.  And it would appear that El Nino is back, greatly affecting weather all across the country.  The good news for those of us in the north and in New England is that our winter is supposed to be warmer than normal and less snow.  Of course, the flip side of that is that is not great news for those who make their living from lots of snow---ski resorts, folks who do snow plowing, those who sell products for use in snow (skis, plows, etc.).  With the cost of heating fuels they way the are and the market slow-down, I for one would welcome a little warmer weather this winter!

For the south, they're predicting rainy soggy upcoming seasons, and potentially heavy flooding in various areas.  They also said the west will experience heavy rainy seasons as well, and the dangers there will be from mudslides.  It seems strange to me how warmer ocean waters can have these kinds of effects all across the country, but we clearly know it does.

Here in New Hampshire, along the seacoast areas of Portsmouth, Hampton, Rye, and into southern Maine, Kittery, Eliot, York, and surrounding areas, it has been unseasonably cool.  Because of that, it seems unlikely that we'll be having warmer than normal fall & winter seasons, but I would surely welcome that because it's just a little too chilly too early here for me this year!

Hi Ann,

Up here in Western New York we have had nothing but rain for 4 days already and no sunshine on the horizon...  Cold too!!

(I'm not complaining though, this will be the first time that I have seen any "real" snow... I'm excited for now, although I have been warned that this will be short lived! )

Have a great day! :)

My husband & I are going to the Adirondacks for Christmas & I'm glad to hear the winter might be mild. I was not looking forward to the uncertainty of flight delays in December.

Ros, if you've never seen snow, it will be fun the first time, and maybe a few more times, but then the 'fun' can wear off!  ;-)

It is really beautiful after a fresh-fallen snow, everything is covered in a beautiful blanket of white, and it is so still.  Just lovely to look out on that!  Having said that, I'm really kinda hoping for a very mild winter this year......fingers crossed!

Did you see a report about El Nino online Ann? On TV? I had not heard about that.  I have a category on my Columbus Best Blog called Time and Temperature... this is a public post so I can not tell the whole story about why I have a Time and Temperature category... but it is kind of a fun category....  I think I need to find out about El Nino and see what the Farmers Almanac says about our upcoming winter.

Columbus gets more rain than Seattle according to an Ohio blog,  BloggingOhio.com, a city in Ohio has a higher record temperature than a city with a record in Florida.

Yesterday I saw on someone's (?) Active Rain blog Seattle's rainfall vs. Columbus and Seattle was higher so maybe the Buckeye quiz on BloggingOhio.com is outdated ....   oh well... rain, rain go away.  We had rain for two days and the sun is out now.

Actually, I thought I saw an article on the weather page of our paper a few days ago saying that EL Nino was not forming.

And, our Naperville winter prediction? Snowy...lots of snow...and cooler than past years.

If I stumble across the article I'll reference it.

I looked it up... the Old Farmer's Almanac says cold and snow but NOAA says an El Nino formed which could mean warmer and drier in the northern US!!!!!

I like that.  Thanks for the heads up Ann.

I saw the El Nino report on "Good Morning America" this morning, and I had also heard something mentioned about it on the radio station I listen to out of Boston.  I did hear some time back that the Farmer's Almanac was predicting just the opposite of the El Nino report.  And, there's apparently a difference in what "The OLD Farmer's Almanac" predicts and what "The Farmer's Almanac" says.  I never knew there were 2 different Farmer's Almanacs, but apparently there is!

Ann...

The weather is strange in Florida too. We have only had two cold fronts this season. Which means that our lawn man, who takes care of all four of our homes, can not take a vacation this year. Poor guy. Just so you know it is hot around here. Today we saw cooling temps but it will only be for a day or two. The heat really does get annoying at times. Sorry to hear that the snow driven businesses will be affected by this weather trend.

TLW...ROAR!

Hi Ann, you posted this long before I got caught in the Rain. Channel 9 news says this weekend will be in the 40's still above normal. I am still running off of last years oil. I am hoping to stretch it to the end of January.

Thanks Jay

TLW - The weather is just plain weird all over the place for the past year!  I saw a friend of mine today who's from up in the mountain regions here in my state, and he said although plenty of people are happy about the above normal temps and no snow, he said it's also very sad at the same time because so much of his area is dependent on the snow.

Jay - Yep, this was one of the first group of posts I dared put up back then!  Bear & I were watching the Boston news earlier tonight, and it showed temps of 50's and maybe higher for the coming weekend.....strange, but enjoyable.  I'm still working off of the leftovers of last year's oil, too.  I was thinking of ordering some tomorrow though because the oil prices are pretty low right about now.

Thanks both of you for stopping by and commenting!!
