Mandatory Code of Ethics Training

                     URGENT REMINDER

I can't imagine any Realtor not being aware of this MANDATORY CLASS...but I did put my session off until today.  It's quick ~ 2.5 hours or less, and you can take it online at NAR's website.  It's called the:

"Quadrennial Code of Ethics Online Course"

Here's the link to get you in quicker:

Quadrennial Code of Ethics Online Course

You'll need your NRDS number and your Realtor.org login name and password.  It's typical of these types of tests where the wording can trip you up but you only need to answer 19 of the 25 questions which make up the FINAL and it's designed to pass you not fail you :-)

You have 16 days.....and counting

THIS CLASS IS NOT OPTIONAL...IT'S MANDATORY

I'm still wondering what quadrennial means? LOL. Where did that word come from? Hey, maybe if I take this class they will tell me : ) Lawyers! They just are not human.

Gary...hmmm, maybe it means...like...every 4 years.  I know you're a kidder but have you taken the class and now just messing with me ;-)  You're too smart to miss something like this LOL

....and, lest I forget to say it often enough, as always thank you so much for stopping by and commenting, it's what keeps us going :-)

I got that email today. Thank goodness I did this back in the summer. I would hate to be doing it this time of the year with all that has to be done for the holidays!

I just reviewed who took the course so far in my board.  I would say that over 90% of the people on the list took it as a "new member".  Either most experienced agents turns in their license or they will be taking the course on 12/31/08.

I have to talk to my local board. I took one ethic class this year. I am not sure if this class would account for any credit for me.

Laura - pass the word along in your office that it's not as bad as it sounds.  2-2.5 hours and you're done.  The test is designed to pass you.

Gail - I already took the course in June at the Greater Tampa Association of Realtors.  I am sure you are glad you are done with the course.

Jim - Something must be wrong with the reporting mechanism...I saw that link and will check it out.  It's not possible that so many seasoned agents will not take this FREE course to maintain their licenses.

Gail, I'm ok with my Ethics Training; I even took some extra MCE Ethics and Legal that wasn't required for me. Love that education stuff. Thanks for worrying about me though. I'm calling you for all the BIG words.

Hi Gail - Thanks for the reminder.  I took the class earlier on-line but forgot to forward my certificate to my local board.  I just did that as a result of reading your post; you triggered that memory that I needed to do that.  Thanks again!

I think it needs to be done every 4 years.

Quick Note- If you are using your code of ethics for New Hampshire CE Credits the NAR site is not an approved school and will not count towards your continuing ed.

Gail - this is a huge tip.  It will be interesting to see how many fellow licensees will go to sleep and miss this deadline - maybe their punishment will be a shoe thrown at them.

Seriously, keep blogging and best of all have a peaceful and happy holiday season.

Gail, I took an ethics class back in 2006 that qualifies for the NAR requirement.  Agents should  check which class they took to see if it qualifies first, before rushing to sign up for the on line class. Thanks for the great reminder!

This threw me into a quick tailspin.  I didn't know a thing about it.  I called my local board to get to the bottom of it.  If you are in California - state licensing law requires that we take ethics as part of our 4 year renewal.  If you have a current California license, you should be good.

If you are reading this comment and you are in California, please don't just take my word for it.  Call your board and confirm your status.

Hi Gail,

We also have a mandatory "Code of Ethics" due December 20th, and the Saint John Board of Realtors (New Brunswick, CANADA) is currently missing 200 members "Code of Ethics" mandatory course.  Ironically, it was available all year and yet people waited til the last minute. This class is also available online.  If they don't finish it they will have their real estate license revoked and will have to pay to reactivate it, plus an additional charge.

But, Gail, it is only for those that have not taken it within the last four years.  You scared me with that blog title - i thought i missed a major mandate.  I took mine two years ago - I'm good until the end of next year.  Way to rouse the troops, though!

I have taken mine, but I have to say I think this mandatory ethics class is pure BS.  If you are an honest agent now, taking a course every 2/4 years is not going to make you more honest.  If you are a crook, and there are a ton of them out there, it is not going to change them either.  You are either a good guy or not.  A class every 2 or 4 years is not going to make a bit of difference in who you are and the way you do business.  Mandatory ethics class may make the NAR, your local board or whoever feel good and give them some spin material, but that is about all it is good for.  Continuing education classes, yes, but mandatory ethics class is like donating money to the re-election campaign of the Governor of Illinois.  A total waste.

When it comes to taking classes I usually put it off until the last day. This year I thought what the heck I'll get over in before the end of January. What a change. It kinda cool to not worry about getting it done. Now I just need to get started on my Christmas shopping.

Gail~ I just took mine this week in Owensboro, KY.  Our teacher was Virginia "Ginny" Lawson and she was fantastic.  We actually learned AND had fun in that class!

Group Response:  Interesting the different takes on this class...from useless...to thanks for the heads up...to learned and had fun.  Personally, I did feel I learned a couple of things yesterday, especially in the case studies area.  The questions I got wrong all revolved around commissions/procuring cause/respect for peers.  I tended to err in favor of the other agent.  Not saying I wouldn't think the same way in the future...but I will do so with a better knowledge base.  ALL education is beneficial, from refresher to OMG I had no clue.  All of your perspectives are valid and important to our interactions as co-operative real estate agents.  Many Thanks!!!

Hey girl...what's with the group response...are you letting that gold star go to your head? I am really proud of you and happy this was featured! We also have to take ethics classes in Texas and though sometimes lacking in substance, I always get something out of them along with an awareness of how we should be doing business every day! Honestly, like you, the golden rule always applies in my work!

Hey Russell - the group response is a expeditious way of thanking all the kind folks who stopped by to add their 0.20 cents, as in...WAS IT GOOD FOR YOU TOO!!!  BTW, with all the server problems at A|R, might never see the Gold Star Reward...never figured this for a star anyway!!!  I love you MAN.

Congratulations on the Gold Star Florida Woman. I personally think it was because you used the word Quadrennial. We all had to come back to you to figure out what it meant. OK, only me. But don't out me.

I'm hoping that one of the questions isn't "Define Quadrennial" and use it properly in a sentence.

I happy to hear that this post will keep at least a few agents out of trouble, what a rude awakening that would have been to start the New Year.  I don't know what the penalty is, but Ann-Marie in New Brunswick, Canada says it's license revocation there....NOT GOOD!!!

Chuck - You're in luck, the word was never used during the course...you have taken it right?

Greg - You're a hero :-)

Gary - Just for you:  Webster says "occurring or being done every four years"

Hi Gail!  I'm with Bill on the comments!  I know NOT why we have to be reminded that we're doing the right thing but, alas, it's my time to re-up!

I have to tell you though (and I'm pretty pissed at myself for not knowing this) but, I am scheduled to take the class on Monday 12/22 (what about waiting til the last minute?) and I saw your post last night.  I clicked on the link and started the course and am 65% of the way through it.  I AM going to complete it tonight and I AM going to call the RE school who specifically TOLD me that I could NOT take this course online and demand my $65. back!  I should have looked on the NAR site first but, didn't; so, I asked the school secretary and she LIED to me!  Talk about ethics

Thank you SO much for posting this--my time is WAY better spent networking during the day than attending this class that I can take at midnight!!

Hi Tim - As long as you take Ethics in a 4 year period, you're good to go.

Hi Debe - I actually did learn a couple of things from the case studies, I would tend to be too lenient with other agents, so now I can get tough and point to the BOOK ;-)  I'm very happy that a few people found the information helpful....it's all good!  Have fun tomorrow with the kids.

Happy Holidays

Good Luck Shelby - hope you got it done yesterday :-)
